Quick fix for protection of camera in the rain?
 

Hi there

I have a PDX10 and a ME66 shotgun mike.
Wil want to do some outdoor shooting this weekend, but the forcast is for showers. I don't want either equipment to get wet and destroyed.

I am wondering what solutions you have found to protect from the rain, short of buying a kata rain jacket? I mean, can I just cut a clear plastic bag to protect the camera? What about the mike?

Well, I've shot for a lot of years with lots of cameras and lots of rain covers. Custom fitted, vented covers are nice, no question. And they sure can't be beat for durability. But with my own package..... I keep a couple of plastic garbage bags in my case.

They are light weight and take up little space. They are extremely flexible, just rip a little hole where you need it and pull a lens or an eyepiece through. They are so thin that you can operate zoom rockers and focus rings through the plastic. They are definately not as durable, I carry extra.

Another disadvantage is sealing them around the camera. If you can cover up before things get wet, and if it's not too cold, gaffer's tape works fine. Otherwise, you'll be missing the velcro adjustments a custom cover offers. Last week I was outside in cold weather and a clear forecast. Of course it started to snow. We ended up using small office binder clips to hold a plastic bag to the lens shield.
