PDX10 Low Light Performance

low light performance on PDX10 vs VX2000 or PD150

How bad? Would PDX10 be enough for shooting indoor musical concerts or events?

This cam wouldn't be my first choice. My first choice would be the VX2000.

Recently sold my 950E and got myself the JVC GY-DV301E. The quality is simply amazing, and I can say that the low light is better than VX2000.

Check this cam at your nearest store, you'll appreciate it.

Great to hear someone's bought a 301. Tell me the road-tester was talking nonsense Yik, and that you _can_ unscrew that lens hood. And I'd be interested to know how you rate the 301 as better than the VX2k in low light. Have you done an A/B test? It's the only way ~ reading spec sheets is to be fooled full time.

Oh, I forgot to answer Eric's original post. Yes, the X10 will be fine for musical concerts unless it's unlit black costume time. Those new HAD chips are so quiet in gain-up mode you can happily shoot away in the gloom.

Don't forget that the X10's lens looses a good 1.5 stops at telephoto, so position yourself close enough not to require lots of telephoto work and your video will look a lot cleaner and have better colour.

thanks guys!

thanks for the tip, tom.
I'm going to stop by BHphotovideo in Manhattan this weekend see if I could test PDX10 low light performance against JVC and VX2000 (PD150). If its NOT terrible compare with other larger CCD camcorders, I might take it. hope I have luck this time with choosing right camcorder.

best,

By all accounts Sony have smoothed the grain of the TRV950's image in the gain-up mode as against the previous TRV900, but in so doing they've traded (and lost) some light sensitivity. In which case the 950 will be noticeably worse in the gloom than the VX2000 I'm afraid. My VX is a good 1.5 stops better than the TRV900, and at telephoto you can add another half stop. This makes a huge difference in the dark, and is one reason the VX/PD150 is so admired (and aquired) by many.

lowlight performance

I found that low light performance of PDC10/ TRV950 is sufficient to me. At evening I could shoot well in a low lit room. See my site for examples.
Sure the VX2000 and PD150 are more sensitive.
A comparison was given here in one of the trhreads and can be found on:

http://www4.big.or.jp/~a_haru/exknow2002au/night.html

But have a look at the PD150/VX2000 frameshots and see that the blacklevel has been raised. If one corrects for that with a photoediting tool the difference is much less. I think the difference in sensitivity between PDX10p/TRV950 and PD150/VX2000 is sometimes overstated and to my opinion not more as 1 til 1,5 stop. Enlarging those shots reveal more differences.

Jan, I was very interested in your reviews of the Sony PDX10. It was very very helpful. thanks.

Wow! Jan, nice website, and nice PDX10 clips. Thanks!

I'm surprised that JVC GY-DV301E handles smear very well, simply fantastic.

No longer have to avoid shooting street lights and spot lights at night.

I will be back posting some sample shots.

Joe Carney April 10th, 2003 08:01 AM

Yik, could you post over in the JVC HD section? That has become sort of an unofficial area for various JVC cameras. Also, did you get a good price? Even though I'm in the states I would like to get the 301E for use in independent movie making. It doesn't have the color fringe issues the DVX100 has.

Tom Hardwick April 10th, 2003 08:27 AM

I still want to know if the 301's lens hood is permanently fixed to the zoom as the road tester claimed.

Frank Granovski April 10th, 2003 02:32 PM

Yik, doesn't the 301 have a higher bit processor?
