What about the other guys?

Hi all, let me start by saying I love the VX2000. But as of right now I am cameraless as I was forced to sell my gear out of pure financial need. What I'm wondering is how to cameras like Panasonic's DVC-10 or DVC-15 compare to the VX2000. These cameras tend to be significantly less on Ebay, meaning they're right in my price range, but I still don't want to spend $1200 on a piece of junk. So any help would be very much appreciated. I don't know if maybe I should post this in a different section either, I thought I'd start here since I'm really trying to figure out how they compare to the VX2000. Thanks!!

The DVC10 and 15 have the same engine as the PV-DV950/AG-EZ30U - but without the docking station. The DVC15 has XLRs from what I can recall. The resolution should be on par with the GL1. For that kind of money, they are good---old technology cams which will fool lots of people into thinking that they are pro cams; because they're puffy plastic that sit on the shoulder. Personally, I like the EZ30U better, at least it looks like a black mamba-sized NV-MX3000. But of course, they'll work, just that the footage won't look as good as VX2000 footage. Also, these 2 DVC Panasonic models do not have the manual, lower shutter speeds, and their viewfinders, well, aren't very good. Just compare the specs to see what I mean.

They also have a new 1 chip version of the DVC10 and 15 out now---it came out last year, I think. Yes, you read it correctly: a 1 chip model. Go figure.

Frank, thanks for the info. So you would say generally in terms of image, these things are comparable to the GL1, and maybe somewhat like the VX1000 then? I really don't like the big plastic casing they come in, as I find myself shooting in tight quarters sometimes or in situations where I don't want so much attention. I think I'm gonna save up my bones for another VX2000, I really love those Sony's. Thanks again!

The resolution of the VX1000 and GL1 are the same, according to tests I've read in DV Magazine (460 playback lines). You should get the same resolution, or there abouts, with these Panas, but only if you kill the DIS. The VX and GS have OIS.
