generic ac adapter
 

I recently bought a used vx2000 over ebay. it works great except for that it didn't come with the ac adapter that usually comes with it. I have seen generic adapters for about $20 where as to buy a Sony it is about twice as much. Would it be a bad idea to get a generic one? It says that it works with the vx2000.

Nobody can answer that for you as you don't mention any model numbers. Without that info, someone who has specific experience cannot answer you.

I bought a generic one at B&H for $39.95.
It is POQP7400, which comes with both the AC transformer and the cigarette lighter adapter. I have used it for almost two years and have no complaints.

I can't answer your question, but I have a related story. I had a "generic" ac adaptor that I used with my Titanium Powerbook at work. I had it connected to a big DLP projector and something went wrong, either a power spike in the projection booth or a malfunction in the power adaptor itself. We heard a loud bang, but we couldn't figure out where it came from and everything appeared to be OK, so we took a lunch break. When we got back my laptop said the battery was almost dead which was odd since it was plugged in. I soon learned that the power brick was dead, and the power supply in my laptop was also fried (it would run on batteries but they wouldn't charge and it wouldn't run on AC power). It cost something like $600 to repair the laptop, plus the cost of a new power adaptor.

I probably saved $20 in buying that cheap AC adaptor. It had been working fine for over a year. Maybe this has nothing to do with the VX-2000, but if the difference is really only $20 do you really want to take a chance with your $2000 camera?
