Vx2000 vs GL2 in Test Chart Review
 

I am currently deciding between a Vx2100 and GL2, i found a link that has test chart results for a vx2000 and gl2 and i was wondering if anyone who has shot with both can inform me on the accuracy of these charts. the link is http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/bhshootoff_3chip_group.htm

In my opinion it appears that the test from the GL2 contains brighter blues and whites with less contrast versus the vx2000 which appears purple in areas where the gl2 presented a blue color. As for the whites they just seem more white with the gl2.

anyways what i am wondering is, how accurate are these tests?

The tests can mean anything one wants since at least the Sony can be adjusted to a fair range of image settings. Warm, Cold, Sharp, Soft, are all available in the menu settings.

Charts without a LOT of explanation are useless.

Brett, concerning image quality, they are both very good but the VX2000's is better, in my opinion. Consider also that the VX has larger, 1/3" CCDs, whereas the GL2 has smaller, 1/4" CCDs. Regarding those tests, I wouldn't but too much into them. The best tests come from a high-end wave-form monitor playback, and a "real world" comparison done by a seasoned videographer.

That is exactly why i made this post, with hopes that I could acquire information/comparison from an experienced videographer who has "real world" experience with both cameras. So if anyone out there does please feel free to post. Thanks alot for the infomation so far though.

I'm inclined to agree with Mike in that those comparative charts, in themselves, are relatively meaningless. (The charts are also presented as highly compressed .JPG's.) The imaging systems of both the GL2 and the VX2000 (and certainly the VX2100) are quite adjustable. Although they reflect the well-known natural blue-affinity of Sonys -vs- the red-affinity of Canons I am confident that I could adjust my GL2 to peg the Sony image. (And Mike indicated similar confidence in his knowledge of the Sony.) Note that I am not suggesting any such chicanery was afoot for these tests. Just that such exhibits require far greater rigor than those presented.

Choosing between these cameras is a challenge. We have many, many people seeking help with such a choice. The fact is that the cameras have far more in common than in distinction. The bottom line "distinctions" generally come down to just this.

The Sony will perform better under low-light conditions. If you're a hobbyist and plan to just shoot whatever you see this could be a noteworthy advantage.

The Canon features "frame" mode, a type of progressive scan that can produce a somewhat film-like imaging (under controlled conditions) and can also aid in shooting fast action. The Canon also has an excellent 20x (optical) Flourite lens (versus the Sony's 12x).

If these distinguishing attributes don't push you to one or the other you may as well resort to the well-established secondary method of making such a choice. "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe..." You're very likely to be very satisfied with either camera.

Just to add...,

I have GL2, XL1 and VX2000 footage---all shot in similar conditions. This is what I notice:

• XL1 footage is most pleasing and also has the best color saturation.
• the VX2000 footage is a bit sharper but not as "rich."
• the GL2 footage comes last but still a pleasing image. It's footage looks "weak," compared with the XL1 and VX2000 footage.
