The VX2100 is an amazing cam for the price and for a little more you can get the PD170 with built-in XLRs. Either of these cams will give you a great picture and I would only consider the XL2 if you require widescreen and 24p/30p.

Keep in mind the XL2 only uses the the full 1/3 inch chips in the 16:9 mode.......4:3 is the same as 1/4 inch chips.

A lot of cams don't use the entire CCD for 4:3 especially ones with 680k or more pixels per CCD.

The reason a lot of us passed on the XL1 or 2 is tha lack of a decent side screen. In my view, and for my type of shooting, this is a very serious omission.
