PD170 in Auto, Picture washed out
 

In Auto, shouldn't the PD170 use all auto settings. My pictures is washed out compared to the VX2100 when shot side by side, both cameras are in auto. Any ideas? My camera is less than 2 months old and I am wondering if I should send it back to sony.

In auto the image should be the same as the 2100. When you say washed out do you mean the whites are blown out or is it overexposed overall?
Give us a little more info and perhaps we can figure it out.

Overall over exposed. I had to lower the brightness in post to get it to look half way decent. Still didn't look as good as the 2100 without any correction.

Heres a couple of possibilities.

AE was on and up 2 (electronically opens the iris about 1 stop)

Manual Iris button was pushed on and perhaps you didn't see it and the iris was opened too far

Other than that I'm stumped. The 150 and 2000 have the same glass, electronics and chips as the 170 and 2100 also have the same with the DSP of the 170 and 2100 being the new program but even the 170 and 150 and 2000 and 2100 are virtually the same image quality so matching between them is or at least shouldn't be a major problem.

Could be the 2100 custom setup is limited to 6 or 12db while the 170 is 18db?

I would take a look at the "setup level" which I think you'll find in the Manual Set menu. Is it set to 0%? If this is set to 7.5% then your blacks will always appear gray.

I think the guy with the manual iris suggestion may be right. I am..was..having the same problem and using his suggestion I moved the auto lock swith to the middle position and saw that the iris level was visible. When I pressed the iris button the reading disappeared and the camera adjusted itself automatically to the optimal level.

So...thank you from me to the guy who said check the auto iris setting.
