VX2100/PD170 Lens hood
 

Does anybody know where I could order a lens hood for a VX2100 or a PD170? ( I assume they are the same part)
I have been renting an older VX2000 and been offered to buy it for a reasonable rate, however the lens hood is not the original and I would like to see if I could get a new hood for it, but I really like the built in lens cap style on my PD170.

The Sony LSF-S58 lens hood is exactly like the original VX-2000 lens hood only bigger. I use it because it fits around my Sony VLC-HG0758 wide angle lense (which I always use).

What I end up with is a setup as convenient as a stock VX-2000, but with a wider field of vision.

My standard setup is a Sony VX-2000 with a Sony VLC-HG0758 wide angle lense covered by a Sony LSF-S58 lense hood, with a Rode VideoMic with a fuzzy cover on top going through a short 10db attenuating cable so that I can use the automatic level control. As far as I'm concerned it's the perfect 4:3 SD run and gun setup.

As you probably know, the lens hood design was changed when the 2000 became the 2100. The original hood is still available (I not long ago bought another one for the bayonet fitting). It's a good idea of yours to abandon the aftermarket hood and aim for the genuine Sony one. It's a very efficient design. It's light, is the correct aspect ratio and the inner surfaces work in shadow - much better than Canon's XL hood for instance.

I just wanted to update this thread and say I ordered the hood for the PD-170 as Boyd mentioned below and it fits my VX2000 like a glove and makes the whole camera look brand new.

Just for a little clarification: the lens hood you ordered, it's NOT the LSF-S58 model, correct? It's the one with the built in lens cap, that you find on the PD170/VX2100?

I went to the link Boyd was so kind to provide, plugged in "DSR-PD170" as the model, then picked "Accessories" from the Category drop-down list box. Am I to understand that the item I should order is the one listed as "HOOD, LENS" with a "Part Requested" and "Part Supplied" number of 308852801?

I've been wanting to do the same thing forever, and this news excites me. I'd just like to make sure I'm looking at the right thing before I plunk down a hundred bucks for it (considering that there are no images of products on that site).

The 170 with flip close lens cover works on the 150.. I outfitted my 150's with those.. However, if that wasn't you question or even revelant to your comment. I apologize going on 32 hours no sleep..

I very much appreciate your response, Pat, and I'm glad to hear the hood does in fact work. However, in this instance, I'm actually trying to find out from Jeff if I'm looking in the correct location to purchase the thing; he referenced ordering a lens hood from one of the links provided earlier in the thread by Boyd, and I'm curious to find out if it really was the one he was initially seeking out (and whether or not I have the correct part number, so I don't go spending money on the wrong item).

Yes that is the exact part number I ordered. The box actually said VX2100 on it, but it IS the one with the built-in lens cap.

I just thought it'd be nice to update you all on my situation: the (correct) hood arrived today, and man, is it slick. Fits like a charm, though the set screw's a little annoying, being right up against the plastic lump (something to do with the OIS, I imagine, but what do I know?) toward the front of the camera. And it doesn't come out, which is a nice little touch; on the old style hood, the set screw, while captive, would move in and out as you tightened/loosened it. This time, the knurled metal grip part stays put, and only the plastic clamp moves. Smoove diamonds.

I should note, I ended up ordering the part from the second link in Boyd's post, as the first is apparently intended for service centers and the like. I would have had to create an account there first, as a company of some sort, and it felt somewhat dishonest to do that, since I don't own one. I checked out the second link, plugged in that part number, and got the same thing. And though it is true that the second link is only for consumer products, the first one can get you BOTH pro and consumer stuff (VX2100 and 2000 parts are accessible if you enter the model). The difference appears to be the kind of stuff they offer, with the "PartsPLUS" page offering electrical, optical, and mechanical replacement parts, in addition to things like the lens hoods. And for interested parties, there are exploded views of the entire camera available, that show how it all goes together. Aspiring electrical engineers take note! :)
