Mic for the PD-170?

Hello,

I am looking for a good all purpose mic for onboard event work for my PD-170.

I own a good shotgun but would like to have an omni or cardiod for general use.

After talking to Sony support, I was told to get a mic with an output of -60db to -40db to avoid overloading the pre-amps. (the stock mic being -55db)

Sony support also recommended a dynamic mic to handle loud situations like a wedding reception.

Any thoughts?

I am hesitant to use a dynamic since so many that I have used sound best in a close micing situation.

SM81??

Thanks

Nevermind, I have found a solution.

I too am interested in what you chose to get.

I've read a lot of good recommendations on this board. Though I rarely see the Audio Technica AT822 stereo microphone mentioned, likely due to its price. It was recommended by an audio technician at a music store, and I think I bought a slightly used model. I just LOVE this
microphone. The stereo field, sound, and lack of hiss is sooo much better than the on-board Sony VX2000 microphone. It overloads a bit in automatic mode (with AGC), but I don't have such problems in manual audio mode. It's not a dynamic mic, so it needs a AA battery. I use Energizer 2500 mAh rechargeables.

I use this microphone to record martial arts unarmed and stick fighting, and it handles loud wood on wood strikes very well. While it can be used for weddings, I wouldn't recommend it due to its wide response pattern. It's great for picking up ambient crowd noise, though.

Can the at822 be turned into a wireless mic with a butt-plug?

Not if the mic is stereo. All the butt-plugs I know of are single channel.

Hey,

I decided to use a Peluso condeser mic I own with a 10 or 20 db pad switch.

The mic has a switchable capsule for cardioid or omni.

After speaking with the mic manufacturer, I was told the pad does not effect the sound quality outside of a slight S/N ratio change.
