Nifty effect
 

I turn the shutter speed down to 1/4 second on my Sony DSR-PD150 and then have my wife drive me down the street. I get nice flowing lines of industrial or suburban images. If I have a car drive alongside at the same speed, the car remains in focus while the background flows along. Works really well for motorcycles too.

You will probably have to use a combination of ND filters, maybe even one over the lens to control the light at this shutter speed.

With the Sony, I can fold the LCD screen flat against the body and hold it at right angles to my body. Much easier to hold steady that way as its mass is much closer to the body.

I also tried shooting out the back of a SUV at some motorcycles. Hard to hold the camera steady until I turned 90 degrees and then held the camera like above. Much more stable.

Try it, you'll like it.

Mike, can you describe the hold in more detail. If you can see the screen folded back you obviously aren't clutching the camera to your chest. Are you holding it like a length of pipe with palms up or...

I have my right hand in the normal place on the camera so I can control it and my left hand is cradling the camera but also holding the lens hood between my thumb and forefinger.

My forearms are pressed against the sides of my chest and I move them up and down to counteract gross vehicle movements.
