Freerun timecode sync with other Sony cameras?
 

Hi,

I know this works with a Z1U/V1U combo. You can set the timecode to freerun/preset, then use the remote to reset the timecode of both cameras at the same time.

Then, they are both 'synced' (poor mans style) which helps in the edit suite.

Would this work with the EX1?

I thought I read elsewhere in this forum that this technique would work. I can't find the reference though now.

I sincerely hope this is the case. I think the lack of TC sync is a huge gap in this camera, and a place where the Canon cameras are superior. (the ones with SDI I mean.)

Another work around is to manually reset the cameras free run clock, then record an analog clock for a few seconds. Then an editor can manually line up the footage with that clock, and record the TC. Pick one camera as "right" and record the other camera's offset from the "right" one. When forced to work this way I set "A Cam" as the "right" one.

Sounds like you're talking about the "poor man's" SmartSlate.

I think it would be good to lock time of day time code. This way you can line them up even if one stops at one point and then starts again.

Using a single remote to start the clocks on several cameras at once might work.

Maybe the EX will be better at simul-starting a free run. In the Z1U world, I found that the TC tended to drift apart across the 3 cameras in about an hour.

On my AVID, I found it much easier to just find a slate type noise, mark that in and then use the multi cam sync mode from there. An actual clapper or SmartSlate probably would have been even better.
