Match night scenes in Collateral and Miami Vice?

In Collateral and Miami Vice, they use some hd cam of sorts in all the night scenes. i am not sure what michael mann used in vice but some said it's the sony f900 on Collateral.

can the new pmw-ex1 with the smaller 1/2" sensors match the bigger f900 in terms of these night and low light level scenes.

yes, i am aware that even with these scenes, there are a ton of external lighting used, so our mileage will vary with the ex1, but can we get most of that "look"?

The Viper was used on Collateral. It's also a 2/3", but overall a bit more camera than the F900.

I think with the proper lighting (e.g. Paul Cameron shooting) you can get a similar look with the EX1, but you will never match the smoothness and depth in the dark areas.

thanks v,

i guess based on that article, does xdcam ex hold up to the disk based xdcam hd?

just on one point, the new xdcam ex can do 4:2:2 while the author said xdcam hd did only 4:2:0

From what I viewed in the Miami Vice movie, you would not want the EX to resemble that look.

The night scenes IMHO had a ton a of noise for no reason as the characters were not in total darkness like a 'night vision' type of look.

I wondered why all of the noise was part of the scenes.

Why would you want to look like the horrific movie Miami Vice? It was noisy, out of focus, soft - I had to walk out of the theater - worse shooting since Chiat's Day shakey camera introduced the barf camera in commercials many years ago - it was fore runner of Blair Witch. Avoid this for the rest of us that make a living creating beautiful stable images. Thanks.

You call it horrific, I call it beautiful - I loved the look of Miami Vice... I'm really hoping I can get that out of the EX, or at least close to it, because I haven't been able to with my A1 now. I'm also hoping I can get beautiful stable (and clean) images in bright light. Both have their place and both can be beautiful used in the right situation - so I'd prefer a camera that can produce both.
