EX1 1920*1080 30P HQ Demo
 

When ever I get a new camera I go down the Bellagio Hotel to film the water fountains as a test. Its pitch dark when setting up so there is a lot of guess work but here is our first 30p sample... Elvis Presley - Viva Las Vegas synchronized to the the Bellagio Fountains. The file was copied off the camera to FCS2, so chances are pretty good you need to be running FCS2 to play this file. Still if anyone can get this to work on a PC I would be very excited to hear how.

Tried on my PC, and the QT file started downloading, but half a Gig was more than I wanted to download.

I would happily try a much shorter excerpt, just to confirm PC playability.

There have been clips shared before by Mac/FCP-users that use the native FCP-wrapping. These do not play on a PC as far as I know, since they use this proprietary FCP-format.

To all you FPC-users out there, unless you enjoy being in the other seat for once (i e being able to do something that we cannot on the PC), please share your original MP4-files instead! These can be viewed by everyone.

Also, being that we are a Mac & FCS2 house... How do we get the files off in some way that people here with PCs can read?

Staight from the camera is fine for everyone. If you have already edited something together i guess you could render it into any standard video format. Quicktime, Bluray, h264, mpeg2...

PC Format Demo
 

Tried to copy just the .mp4 file off to a PC. The only thing that could play the file was VLC Media Player but there was no audio. So we loaded Sony's Clip Viewer software and exported a .mxf file. Again the only thing we had that could read the file was VLC Media player but this time there was audio.

Hope you enjoy as we are very pleased with how the video looks.

We used just the built in stereo mic. Fortunately, we know where all the big speakers so we park the camera directly under one of them.

So you say you do this shot as a test whenever you get a new camera? Any chance you've done this with an XL2?

I'm psyching myself up for the next upgrade and would love to see how big of a step up it's going to be.

David, I am very impressed with the EX1's resolution/detail in the image and manner in which noise is handled in that night scene/light burst scene.

I d/l the MXF, played on PC via VLC player version 0.8.6d

I just loaded the Viva Vegas MXF into Avid Liquid and the rez and detail are pretty amazing. Compared to footage from my JVC HD100a, ...,it is much much sharper. Although the JVC looks maybe a little smoother and still more filmic to my eyes, (720p/30). But that's just my subjective opinion based on an apples to oranges comparison. In fact, I'm pretty sure the JVC would have not been able to shoot those fountains, lights and still expose the Bellagio without being bumped up to at least 9db, or even higher. Those 1/2 sensors make a huge difference in latitude. I would love to know what Gamma settings/profile you used.

Otherwise, the contrast range, color, resolution, ..I mean it just pops.

Thanks for the clip David. Your work has convinced me to go for buying the EX1. I was waiting to see what the Z7 looked like, but I would be surprised if the 1/3 sensors on that camera could compare to the 1/2 inch CMOS on the EX.

Also, do you remember where your f-stop was at that given time?

I am afraid everyone is going to be a bit disappointed with the answer but here goes..... I don't know for sure but I will share what I can...

The camera was in full manual mode. Camera settings were still with all settings to default. No Picture Profile was selected and Gain was set to 0. White Balance I think was at 3200k. ND Filters were off. F-stop was 2.8 and the zoom was set at 5.8. This really was a shot in the dark as it was very cold and too dark to see the camera settings. Also because we set up in the dark and not during a previous show, we really had no clue how the bright light flashes from the fountains would react.

Thank you for the good words on the video everyone. Positive feedback is always appreciated. And, I promise to keep a log of my settings for future demos... So long as it is not cold and dark!

I have put up two more demo files in the .mxf format. As promised, this time I kept notes. The footage is of a giant American flag waving in a strong wind. For those of you familiar with Las Vegas, this is one of those giant flags over a Terrible Herbst gas station. I think the are like 20*15.

This footage is a tight and tighter of the waving flag. I was very curious to see the effect of the waving so all comments are welcome.

According to my log, the camera settings were as follow:

720HQ
24P
ND2
Circular Polarizer
Gain: 0
WB: 8600k
f-Stop: 5.6

Beyond this, no Picture Profiles, detail settings, or any other camera settings were changed.

David, Thanks for posting 720 HQ files. I viewed the two files via VLC player on PC and upon pausing at various locations, I see no compression artifacts. I thought perhaps the flag's material seams and shadow area would be a good candidate for compression artifacts, however, nothing of concern spotted via a quick review.

Perhaps similar footage at a faster shutter, say 1/120 or 1/250 would be an interesting comparison, so as to not have any possible smudging of the image that may be masking potential for compression artifacts to appear. That said, I don't expect to see any artifacts at faster shutters speeds, based on various footage that has been posted. The EX1, looking good.

David, did you shoot 1/48 shutter?

I have a question about taking notes.
Is it not possible to import this information as metadata in to your editor (fcp/avid/vegas) ?
