EX1 clips to Vegas 8.0a?

While trying out different NLEs with EX1 I simply keep running into problems. How do I import EX1 clips to Vegas Pro 8.0a? I understood that Vegas should have native support for EX1 but it says that MP4s are in unknown format.

EDIT: I'm speaking about HQ clips which clip browser can not convert to MFX.
EDIT2: Added "Pro 8.0a"

Have you tried using the Sony Clip Browser to re-wrap to MXF?

Tuomas Sebastien January 9th, 2008 09:52 AM

I can't rewrap HQ clips

Erwin van Dijck January 9th, 2008 09:59 AM

The workflow most of us use is not with the mp4 clips.

From the Sony website you can download a small program called "Clip Browser". Either via Camera-USB-cable or a seperate SxS card reader you have to emtpy the memory cards with this software.

What the Clip Browser does is quickly unwrapping the mp4 container, in which true MXF-files are archived, and copy them to your PC hard-drive. These MXF files are 100% compatible with Sony Vegas.

regards,
Erwin

Only SQ clips can be rewrapped. I bought EX1 for HQ use only.

Craig Seeman January 9th, 2008 10:12 AM

Since SQ is HDV compatible and HQ is XDCAM, it sounds as if your system is missing something. Check Sony for Vegas updates. It looks like Vegas should be at 8.0c and you said you had 8.0a.

EX1 into Vegas is easy !!

Ok i've got an EX1 and vegas pro 8(a),you need the clip browser software to convert,it's quick and easy and does HD cos that what the EX1 is.
Here's a little tutorial.

Paul.

Tuomas Sebastien January 9th, 2008 10:17 AM

Vegas pro is 8.0a (the c version is for cheaper studio package)

Tuomas Sebastien January 9th, 2008 10:20 AM

and once more.... I CAN'T rewrap 720P HQ files to MFX. Clip browser says "unsuported format is specified"

So apparently Vegas is not compatible with HQ clips of EX1? Even if i could rewrap HQ MP4 to MFX what would be the sense in that since MFX is 1440 vertical while MP4 of EX1 is 1920 vertical

Paul Kellett January 9th, 2008 10:24 AM

Are you using Vegas Pro 8 ? That's what you need, you haven't said which Vegas you're using. If so it should work.

Tuomas Sebastien January 9th, 2008 10:25 AM

Yes, Vegas pro 8.0a build 179

Paul Kellett January 9th, 2008 10:26 AM

Weird, that's the same as i'm using.

Tuomas Sebastien January 9th, 2008 10:28 AM

When you go to import and select MP4 file from EX1 does it show all the infos below? Mine simply says "Unknown".

Paul Kellett January 9th, 2008 10:34 AM

That's correct, vegas won't import files unless they're first changed to mxf.
Did you read the link/tutorial i just sent,a few post's up ? That's exactly what i'm doing,and it goes with no problems,fast.

I CAN'T rewrap 720P HQ files to MFX. Clip browser says "unsuported format is specified" as I answered few posts up and few posts up from it...

Vegas is such an intuitive, efficient and intelligent NLE. That's why I really can't understand that Vegas does not manage this silly rewrapping automatically when importing native EX1-clips. Why bothering the user with an additional importing step in the first place? (And with a poorly designed piece of software - Clip-browser, that is.)

Tuomas Sebastien: Use new version Clip Browser software.

I stand corrected. Yes Vegas Pro is still at 8.0a.

I do believe there's been an update to the ClipBrowser since the one released with the Camera. I believe the version with the Camera is 1.0 and there's a 1.1 as Zenes points out. on the Windows side (Mac still at 1.0).

Tuomas Sebastien January 9th, 2008 12:16 PM

Thanks guys.. i downloaded updated version and it converts

Graeme Fullick January 9th, 2008 03:26 PM

Toumas,

This is a known issue. The problem is that you are using the older version of the clip browser. You will need to go to the Sony web site and download the latest version.

I had exactly the same problem - but the new version of the clip browser fixed it instantly.

All the best,

P.S. Look like the others beat me to it.
