Just as an option, if you live in the US you can get a refurbished MacBook at the on-line Apple Store for less than $900.

got macs coming out of my ears. I want an ultra portable computer with EXPRESS Card slot. Just don't want to throw good money after bad...done everything and no success....

Kevin Walsh August 14th, 2008 05:52 AM

Phil have you tried testing the expresscard slot with something other than an SxS card? I have been using my 2133 with the older bios F.02 and I haven't had any problems.
I was just thinking there may be a hardware problem. My computer is running Vista Business, 1600MHz, 2GB, KBC Ver. 7.11, Bios F.02 .

Piotr Wozniacki August 14th, 2008 07:47 AM

It also might be a Vista Basic problem:

When you connect a PCI ExpressCard device to a portable Windows Vista-based computer, the device may not work correctly

Paul Kellett August 14th, 2008 08:15 AM

Mine is Vista home PREMIUM although i can't see basic being any different.

Paul.

Paul Kellett August 14th, 2008 08:16 AM

Phil, have you installed vista SP1 ?
It speeds up the pc a bit anyway so even that is a good enough reason.

Paul.

Phil Bloom August 14th, 2008 08:43 AM

have installed vista ultimate and nothing. the express card port works as far as adding firewire to it using a card.

I just cant get this damn bios thing to update. i REFUSE to give up if it works for some...thanks for all help chaps

John Hedgecoe August 14th, 2008 02:10 PM

Maybe try installing XP Pro SP3 instead. It works for me.

can you install from a hard drive?

John Hedgecoe August 15th, 2008 05:48 AM

If you were to setup the XP installation on an external USB hard drive where the XP install was bootable, I imagine you could.

What about networking the 2133 to another computer and doing the installation from there?

Without a USB DVD drive, I really do not know what the best solution would be.

You might also try looking here...

They may have some useful information to help you. Also, take a look in your device manager and see if anything is NOT working and reinstall any drivers that are problematic.

Phil Bloom August 18th, 2008 01:00 PM

think it is time to give up

done everything

installed xp

updated bios, bought external dvd. reinstalled factory windows. still no sxs showing up. But sxs firewire card word fine. Maybe it is faulty.

computer can see cards when camera is plugged into the usb so the driver is working fine

Paul Kellett August 18th, 2008 02:07 PM

Don't blame you !!

Paul.

Oh, come on, Phil -- don't give up so easy! :-)

spent days on it. not worth the hassle. nothing more i can do

Noah Yuan-Vogel August 19th, 2008 04:33 PM

did you check the bios settings (especially ahci/hot-swap settings)? call hp for help? perhaps someone you know who is very good with computers that can help you in person?

ah well it was worth a try, just seems like there is definitely a way since we have had reports of it working for others. odd that it is so complicated to get working

Sorry, Phil, I meant that completely as a joke. You exhausted options, tried things every which way. I don't blame you -- I'd have quit a while ago.

Hey Phil I know what you mean now.
Again, I'm sorry it didn't work.
Any other suggestion?
I'm about to go on a trip with the EX-3 and a few cards and I'm looking for the same thing.
Thanks.

Buba Kastorski August 20th, 2008 07:13 AM

Just get the Vaio,
that's why I returned SPX next day back to the store;

Alex da Silva August 20th, 2008 11:15 AM

The equivalent ultra portable Vaio goes for almost U$2K!!!

Noah Yuan-Vogel August 20th, 2008 11:31 AM

yeah sony vaio subnotebooks are incredibly overpriced, as is just about anything that uses intel (ultra) low voltage chips. i say either go netbook with an atom processor and not expect to be able to play your footage or go with something with a real (not ulv) notebook cpu in it. sony and fujitsu are two of the few companies that have been consistently making subnotebooks/umpcs since before cheap netbook cpus were an option. Might wanna look into the Gigabyte M912 or Kohjinsha sc3 as i mentioned if you want <10" under $1000 with expresscard. if you can go just a little bit larger, something thats 12" might actually be able to edit. the HP tx2500z for example is a 12" tablet pc with 2ghz dual core cpu 3GB RAM and expresscard for $699 after $200 off coupon. thatd have no problem doing simple editing of XDCAM footage (id say its an up to 6x faster cpu than the 2133). and i love the idea of a tablet in the field since you dont have to be sitting or at a desk to use it.

oh yeah also lenovo's new ideapad s10 is a 10" netbook with expresscard and only $429, wont be shipping for at least a month though.

Alex da Silva August 20th, 2008 11:43 AM

The HP tx2500 seems like a possible option.
Ideally I just have a very (ultra!) portable storage manager (and maybe viewer?) solution for locations. As for the storage itself I'll go for mirrored RAIDs.
When traveling and moving around it's a hassle and an extra risk to haul a laptop.
Panasonic has a great, but expensive solution, the P2 Gear.

yes, It is convenient, but it doesn't have to be ultra portable,
and don't get that ultra portable (11') TZ series - piece of crap, just got rid of it and getting normal 15.4' with blu-ray burner 4Gb RAM 300Gb HD for almost half price of that little one,
I like to keep all (hardware/software) in one brand name, works for me OK.

Phil Bloom August 21st, 2008 07:17 AM

i wish i had got the mini note to work. just dont get why i couldnt

Paul Kellett August 21st, 2008 09:43 AM

Get the same lappy as i got. Acer 2920.Only £500.
Dual core, 2ghz, 2gb ram, express slot. 12 inch screen.
250gb hard-drive, dual layer burner.
Just got a firewire to express card slot for it for capturing via firewire from tape based cams.
It runs Clipbrowser, no stuttering at all on playback, it also runs vegas pretty smooth as well.

Brilliant for the money, no problems at all with vista home premium or sxs cards.

Paul.

John Hedgecoe August 21st, 2008 12:15 PM

Phil, I feel for you and all the problems you seem to be having trying to get the expresscard slot to work with the SxS cards. Based on everything stated in this thread, I really think you need to contact HP service.

First to see if they can resolve your problem, and second, if they cannot, then to replace your 2133 as it may be defective. It seems to me, at this point, it is a warranty problem.

Good luck.

Phil Bloom August 29th, 2008 04:39 AM

got a refund. Bought another one which had already been downgraded to XP and it worked first time...

Weird.

John Hedgecoe August 29th, 2008 05:25 AM

Glad to hear you got the problem resolved. Obviously the first one was defective.

Marius Boruch August 29th, 2008 10:27 AM

can this device be used with Sony SBAC-US10 card reader in the field instead of a laptop??? I mean to back up SxS cards. It is pocket size and MUCH less expensive.

Yes - it has a built-in ExpressCard slot so you can offload SxS cards without the need for the Sony USB reader. My experience so far has been positive - ~3mins to offload a full 8GB SxS card with the Shotput Xpress software.

he is talking about the device at the bottom of his post which is a portable hard drive for offloading photos.

Anybody know the workflow for dumping SXS onto PRo disc with the U1? Not worked it out yet!

Adam Levins May 6th, 2009 02:35 PM

I am considering the HP 2133 Mini-Note FM817URR Netbook - VIA C7-M 1.2GHz, 2GB DDR2, 120GB HDD, 8.9" WXGA, Windows XP Professional.

My main editing system is a Mac. Is it possible to get the Windows SXS Transfer software to output files that I can work with in FCP?

Is it more of a storage device only?

Thx in Advance
