Does the 32GB card require the firmware upgrade?

Hi - sorry - I'm sure this has been addressed before, but I couldn't find the answer on a search and I'm kinda in a hurry. I have a fairly early-issue EX1 - do I have to update the firmware to use a 32GB card or not? I have an acute need for more card space - was gonna buy 2 16GB cards, but a 32GB is actually cheaper - but I'll need it this weekend, no time to update firmware before then.

Bob, i'm pretty sure you need the update for the 32gb sxs.
Why no time for the update ?
A 32gb sony is big bucks, how many sdhc cards could you get for that price ?
It takes about 30 mins to do yourself. I presume you don't have the firmware ?

Paul.

No, I don't, Paul - I was going to send the camera to Sony, but haven't gotten around to it and suddenly have a request to record a longish event that I need more card space for.

I haven't been following threads closely recently - no time. Sounds like there's a way to use SD cards instead of SxS - yes?

Thanks for the info.

Yes, at about 1/10th the cost. You might want to make time to find it out.

Short version:

Kensington 7-in-1 Expresscard adapter (US$40)

+

16 GB SDHC Card (US$65)

+

Firmware 1.11

=

Cheap HQ and SQ recording but overcranking past 40fps isn't working. Everything else does.

I upgraded my firmware last night. Took 20 minutes.

For the current price of 1x 32gb SxS card you could buy 704Gb of SDHC cards - this is based on £900 for the SxS card and £20 each for Transcend 16gb cards - I've factored in one Kensington Express card adapter at £20 as well.

This takes a lot of thinking about.... er...ummmm...

Even for the SDHC solution, you'll still need to update your firmware to 1.11.
and it really does only take about 20 minutes. Maybe 5 minutes longer if you are clumsy with an eyeglass screwdriver in getting the service panel off.

Also, from the other threads, the Kensingtons seem to be on back order in a lot of places.

Or go pick up that 60GB add-on drive, but you'll need the 1.11 firmware update for that as well.

If you don't have the time for updating and shopping, dump an HDV signal from your EX1's FireWire port to your PC using Adobe OnLocation or Capture Magic HD on the Mac... then your only limitation is the size of the drive you are capturing to. I did a 4 hour meeting to a 500GB drive with great success and ease this way.

What do you mean by "this"? Updating firmware or using SDHC cards instead of SXS cards?

....HA, the SDHC card thread is about 47 pages long or something like that....so i presume you are referring to that....

Probably still faster than Sony's four week turnaround.

Maybe somebody needs to post a tutorial on Vimeo complete with Camatesia or ScreenFlow screen cast.

UHM.... the Firmware upgrade PDF is only 11 pages...
Start halfway down page 7. End after the 3rd line on page 11.
That's only 3.5 pages of Korenglish.

SDHC... Update to 1.11, Order as many Kensington 7-in-1 Media Readers for ExpressCard slot adapters and SanDisk Ultra II or Extreme III 16gb (or wait for the 32GB) SDHC cards you can handle/afford/want to gloat about. (Some people are also having luck with Transcend 16GB)

- You wont get much more than 40 frames on overcrank.
- Don't forget to pull the entire combo, not just the SDHC card from the adapter.

Search this forum for posts by Steven Thomas, he's got all the inside track on the SDHC substitute for SxS.

I seem to be able to reliably overcrank to 52 with my Kensington/Extreme III solution. I've filled the card a few times and have never had an error at 52 or lower.
