Cataloguing EX1/EX3 files

I will be storing all my EX3 clips on 750gb hard drive(s). Can anyone recommend a good image cataloguing database application that will both give a visual reference to the clips and also allow you to enter Keywords for a clip metadata search, i.e. “Tower Bridge”, “Poppy field” etc.

You do not need a 3rd party program if you use a Mac with OSX which gives you visual cataloging.
Having said that, if you use Adobe Creative suite, then 'Bridge' is a great program for this - you can even preview your clips (QT) and search etc.

Thanks for your reply, I am looking for a dedicated package something along the lines of Portfolio etc. Just thought someone may be using some advanced Data Asset Management application. Bridge is perhaps too basic for an advanced search.

No answers?

Surely you must be using some form of database to keep track of your clips, or do you just resort to using pen and an old fashioned index list.

How about Final Cut Server? I went to a seminar that demonstrated it logging everything and then finding whatever you needed.

Thanks, but I run a Windows PC with Premierre CS3

When I asked similar questions about cataloguing it was suggested that I look at CatDV.

don't see any mention of HD compatibility on the catDV site...

Hi Vincent
Good question.
I presume you shoot a lot of many different kinds of subject?

I use... the Dewey Decimal system!
Yes, the oldie but goodie that all libraries and bookshops use.

Check it out, it could be exactly what you need, plus there's a built in advantage in that everybody who reads more than a little will know how to operate it.

I just have a set of folders and subfolders set up using the DD system and use them for almost everything - i.e. I have one set for stills, one set for movie clips, one set for sound effects, one for research materials... you get my drift.

No databasing required, just a regular desktop search will bring almost anything I need to the window level almost instantaneously, much faster than any program I can think of.

HTH
Cheers!
Chris
