Lipsyncing to overcranked vision for music video
I am shooting a music video for a young band and I want to shoot some of it at 60fps and have the lead singer's vocals match the overcranked footage. Can anyone recommend what speed I should play the playback audio. If I am shooting 25p then 60fps is about 2 1/2 times that so I should stretch the audio 2 1/2 times as well. Is my maths right or am I completely outside the ball park?

60/25=2.4
Speed up your music play back by 2.4, set your EX to 720/25P, over crank to 60. Have the band prance around trying to look cool at 2.4x normal. Your video played back at 25P "should" match your normal speed music when dropped onto your edit timeline. Depending on what the song is, 2.4 may be too fast. Try a few test shots. |
If you shoot at 24p you can play the music at 2.5 times exactly. (24 x 2) + (24 x 0.5) =48 + 12 = 60
But maybe you only could do 25p. If you have your shutter on and at 180º you will have to compensate the expousure, and guess what, by 2 and a half Stops! a lot more light if you are short of Kws I did this effect with an old DVCAM without overcrank and looks good enough. Good luck. Andres |
I wonder what you would gain with that setup - record at 2,4 time speed and speed everything up x 2,4 - playing back would be as looking at normal speed - at least I think. What would the effect be ?

Bo
you are right about speed, but the effect is like all is more bigger or heavier. And if you use water or if you jump or move it will be slow motion. You only has to increase the "music performance" of the artist. Lipsink and "playsink" (guitars or keyboards or drums). Its looks weird. and interesting Andres |
A few years back I shot a musicvideo (I Live For You) using the same setup as described by Andres.
If I remember well we shot it at 50fps. Anouk, the artist in the videoclip, was submersed in a huge plexiglass cylinder filled with water to enhance the slowmotion effect even further. We used greenscreen behind the cylinder and a playbacktape was made with the track of the song at twice the normal speed. The guy who directed the video (Rosto A.D.: MIND M Y G A P ) also made the wonderfull backrounds and the organical umbellical cord alike structures. It indeed looks very weird. Good luck, Robbert-Jan |
OK - So you need something else than the band to give it the special effect of slowmotion.
Good idear - now I understand what you mean. |
Bo, think about a nice long hair girl and a little wind.
She is singing with lipsinc but the hair will look more "glamourous" because the SloMo effect. Or maybe she use a vaporous long dress. Andres |
Hello Robbert-Jan,
I looked at youre clip from Anouk, woh..great work and a very good xample how to use the overcranking in a creative way. beautifull. Siep |
Hi Siep,
Thanks for the compliment. cheers, robbert-jan |
