Silent Disco - shot on EX1

This is a short web promo I put together for a silent disco company.

A silent disco does away with the traditional speaker systems used in nightclubs or festivals and instead issues visitors with wireless headphones that allow the wearer to choose to listen to one of two live DJs performing at the event.

I used my EX1 on a multi-rig pro to allow me to be mobile and mingle with the crowds. Because all of the visitors were wearing headphones I was able to transmit the music from one of the DJs to the camera wirelessly as well as use a shotgun mic to record people singing along to the music on a separate channel.

I hired a Sony on camera LED light to give some fill for the dark scenes, because the light is able to be adjusted in brightness it allowed me to get just enough light onto the crowd without making them look out of place in the dark or colour lit surroundings.

The biggest problem was that my assistant decided to follow me around taking flash photo's and the EX1 cannot handle flash photography with it's rolling shutter. I asked him to stop as soon as I realised it was him but it did limit my choice of clips when it came to editing.

Hey Paul,
What format did you shoot that in?
And how much gain did you use for some of the shots .
Looks great.

Cheers
Simon

Hi Simon, I shot in 720/25p HQ with the shutter off. The gain was at 0dB most of the time, there were a couple of times when I set 3dB, but I tried to use the top light to adjust illumination rather than boosting gain.

I wanted to keep the darkness of the location in the shots to retain the club feel rather than making it look unrealistically bright.

It's actually really good. The most common reaction we got from people was that they thought it was going to be rubbish, but found it to be much more enjoyable than normal high volume events. I had one of the audio channels being fed into my headphones too and even walking round with the camera the atmosphere seemed better and a lot more of a shared experience than just being in a really loud venue where you can't communicate or decide what to listen too.

Paul

That looks great. Any insight into picture profile details used? I'm looking for a good low light profile and your material looks good in what must have been a fairly dark environment?

Thanks Peter, thanks for bringing that up, I should have mentioned that I used the PP described by Raul Roma in the following thread... EX1 @ Nightclub - The Digital Video Information Network
