XDCAM EX News from NAB
It's late so I'll be brief.
There's a new SxS offload device coming from Sony. The PHX-MS240 has a removable 240Gb cartridge and will offload a from SxS cards at around 10x realtime. It can be plugged in to an EX to allow playback from the device to check through footage. You can connect the unit to a computer usin esata or usb. In addition the cartridges can removed from the unit and then plugged in to a computer via USB or esata. Suggested price $2000 with cartridges at Ģ500. Price of a 32Gb SxS card to be reduced by 40% to approx $900. |

Thanks. |
Shame they didnīt include a FW800 connection for that price
|
Probably no firewire because firewire isn't hot swap.
Paul. |
You can get express card to esata adapters for less than $50 and it's much much faster than firewire.
|
Good news on the 32GB SxS price drop! I never made the plunge to the cheaper solution because I have two 16GB and an 8 GB and I like to have all my overcranking options without having to think about which card I have in the slot. I'm prone to stupid mental errors.

When they first came out I heard they werenīt very reliable, are they now? |
B&H already has the price drop in effect. I ordered a 32Gig card today for delivery tomorrow. Mixed blessing of a surprise seeing it under $1,000...great for this one, but I just bought one last week from Abel Cine for $1500 and asked specifically about a price drop...
Sigh...I couldn't help it (had a shoot), but one should never buy anything the week before NAB. :-) Kevin |
So - what's going on at NAB?
It seems like our EX1:s and EX3:s are still "state of the art" as far as Sony is concerned. No new announcements at NAB of any new EX-cameras after what I have heard.
However, I am curious to hear what else is new. Any new EX-related gadgets or any new cameras from the competition that we have not heard about before. Please - if anybody visiting NAB can find the time between cheap drinks, strip bars ;-) and of course visiting the convention center - please give us a report! |
I think Alister Chapman covered it all, lower price for 32GB SxS and an SxS offloading device. I didn't notice anything else regarding the EX series.

Not that is has anything to do with NAB, but Las Vegas has moved the hotels further apart and, consequently, you have to walk further from hotel to hotel than in previous years.

Rosco solution for IR ...
I'd like someone to comment on the IR filter coming out of Rosco. Has anyone checked it out?
|
I saw a prototype magnifier at the Hoodman booth that turns the EX1 lcd into a viewfinder like the EX3. It was focusable and held in place by a neoprene cover. I really liked it. They said to look for it in about 60 days.
|
Did they give any idea as to cost?
|
Attendance at NAB was way off from 2008. The economy is hitting everyone, I guess. Any stellar introduction of equipment will appear as a media blitz so, you won't have missed any new announcements. Just stay tuned to this website and anything of consequence will become apparent. Seems like Meryem Ersoz reported anything I found important in another thread. Pretty much of a yawner this year.
|
Michael: was it that product:
Camcorder Mount Strap-Hoodman Corporation Or something especially for EX1 ? Thanks! Peter |
Looking at the specs on that item "it fits LCD screens up to 3.0cm" - I would guess they are bringing out a larger one for the EX1 since the LCD is 3.5. Price doesn't seem bad and it seems easier to take on and off compared with other solutions.
|
The Hoodman in the link is their version that isn't big enough for the EX1 3.5" screen.
There is a hood available from CAVision for around $100 now as well. I'm thinking of getting it but the Hoodman might be ok when it's available. |
Yes it is the Hoodman eye piece, but with an extender that moves it away from the lcd about 1 inch. The extender make it fit the 3.5" lcd. They said that if you already have the eye piece like I do, you will be able to just buy the extender. I asked about price. They didn't know yet. Without the eye piece, I can't imagine that it will be too expensive since it's just a rectangular plastic ring and a new neoprene jacket.

I have tested the Rosco IR filter on my EX-3. It will cut out most, if not all, of IR contamination. BUT; it is like the Schnieder in that you can get green vignetting on W/A lenses |
I have the Hoodman for my 5dmkII, I can confirm it is too small for the EX-1 screen in standard form, not sure how the extender bit would work.

The biggest XDCAM EX-related announcement (IMHO) was Calibrated{Q} Software's MP4-EX Import software, which now means instant use of MP4 files (even orphaned from the file structure) in Quicktime-compliant NLEs. No more need to use XDCAM Transfer.
Thread: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/jvc-gy-hm...-xdcam-ex.html Calibrated Software Calibrated{Q} MP4-EX Import for Mac OSX Calibrated{Q} MP4-EX Import for Windows Avid AMA for instant editing of MP4 files was quite significant as well. |

While OT, I'll respond to the NAB numbers.
Registration was around 83,000. That does not mean attendees. Vendors we spoke with were very pleased with the response and many shared that they actually saw customers and potential customers rather than "what kind of camera is that?". |
