Shooting PAL in Dallas......it worked
 

Well, last week I did a shoot here in Dallas for a New York based production company who are doing a documentary on capital punishment for Israeli TV. As we shot mostly outside I had no problems.....but we got several night shots and at one location at a store. The parking lot was lit up by a very large fluorescent light....I noticed in the VF that the picture was "fludering" or having a wave go through it....the question is: is this the flickering that the manual is talking about and if I put the flicker reduce..would it gotten rid of the problem?

the picture did not look bad at all and the producer says " I can live with it"....the rest of the night shots came out OK....

In the camera menu, did you try to turn on "Flicker Reduce" in 60Hz Auto mode? That should have taken care of it.

Thanks...but I will try that next time, as I got a email this morning and they will be back in January for some more shooting...and they said the video looks good.

You should try and set the shutter speed to 1/60 if shooting under Fluorescent lights when shooting Pal in the US. The flicker reduce might work but I also have seen it screw up stuff when left on. Not sure which EX cameras give you the 1/60 shutter speed from Sony in Pal . You might be able to use Clearscan if you can't set up a Shutter position. Yes you will lose some sensitivity but what can you do.

I've tried the flicker reduction in the camera and it really did nothing much for my problem with off frequency fluros at all. I just lived with it, as it was only hitting the walls behind the performers it was quite a nice effect, kind of like reflections off water.
If I had to avoid the 50Hz/60Hz problem I'd be matching frame rates to local mains frequency.

I shoot 25P in the US a lot and I always set my shutter to 1/60th to avoid the rolling band issue. It's simple and it works!
