External Monitor & Scopes
 

Having spent a fair amount of time with the Picture Profile recipes, I have got to the point where I want to get a set of scopes (DSC chart, etc). I thought it might be a good idea to tie in the purchase of an external vectorscope with an external monitor. This has the added benefit of having a large monitor for focusing on set as well as providing a good monitor for the client should the job warrant it.

The most nicest piece of kit I have come up with is a Marshall V-R261-DLW which is a 26" monitor that clears the 4 grand mark and there is a 17" version that is about 3 and a half big ones. Both have full 1920 x 1080 pixel ratios so no dithering down in full screen mode.

If there are people here that use scopes can weigh in on the pros and cons of dedicated scopes versus intergrated ones. And if there are cheaper solutions that have near the same utility, I am all ears.

Something I considered before purchasing a Panasonic BT-LH1710W (17" w/ vectorscope & waveform) is BlackMagic's Ultrascope. BM also recently released a similar product for laptops.

I also looked into Flanders Scientific, who has 2 17" LCDs and a 24" LCD with scopes.

FYI, most if not all of these high end 17" LCDs have a setting to show 1:1 pixels.

Thanks Steve for the info. I was looking at your monitor as well. Didn't realize it had scopes built in. I also see it can be powered by 12V via a 4-pin XLR connector!

Steve, do you know if there is a bracket available that allows you to mount it to a light stand/C-stand? The product shots I can find show all the inputs on the rear but not the whole rear of the unit. Hard to know what mounting options there are.

I am now leaning towards the Panasonic BT-LH1710W. The consensus on it appears that this unit, while an older model, is better as it is not noisy like the new one.

I don't know if you have considered accessories but both the Flanders and Panny sort of need some extra parts: 1) hood 2) case 3) screen protector for Panny - Here are the links:

For scopes, I think the Flanders include more scopes than the Panny. I would have purchased the Flanders if I didn't have a local Abel Cine Tech to support. Gregger Jones has taken care of me so I give them my business whenever I can. Plus, they had both the 1710w and 1760 in their showroom for me to play with, and if something went wrong, I know the Abel Cine guys will take care of me.
