Any advice from fellow British EX1'ers?

Hi,

Just wondered if any of you chaps had found a PP that is any good for cloudy days? I have found that superb image quality also shows cloudy skies truly as they appear....DULL!!

I look on in envy at some of the wonderful stuff shot by our brethren in places such as California, Hawaii or Sydney with the lovely cobalt blue skies!

Oooh the British preoccupation with the weather....grrr

I'm not located in the UK, but here in Poland the autumn days can also be dull...

What I found useful is a combination of hardware and "software" solutions:

- using ND grad filter in my mattebox, to cut that extra light from the cloudy sky (yes - it is *relatively* brighter than the blue sky of the sunny California)

- using the Cine4 gamma curve (to further help exposure of the low/mid-bright objects against the dull, yet relatively bright, cloudy sky)...

Hope it helps

Piotr

Thanks Piotr,

I have a an ND grad, not thought of using it in that way. Very interesting!

You could also try using a graduated blue filter.

Double-plus-good agree on CineGamma 4 for dull days. Expose for your clouds and the MUDs and darks don't sink without trace, though this is at the expense of a little more noise than the EX line is associated with. You can tame it a bit with a little negative crispening (sic).

Also helps in low/bad light.

Will need a little help in post to ensure the blacks sit well, but nothing arduous.

Ah , sod it!! Lets just all move to California!
