Viewing XDCAM files on a iMac?
My NX800 is due to arrive in an hour or so. Panic, minor or otherwise. How can I view the video files, the clips, on this old iMac?
I must be able to view, delete, trim and name clips before uploading them to FCPX. Ron ps then there will be the question of 4:2:2 clips on an oldish i7 iMac. New iMac will be the answer I guess. |

Re: Viewing XDCAM files on a iMac?
A bit confused... you are posting in the XDCAM-EX forum, is that a mistake? I've had an XDCAM EX1 since around 2009 and it's been supported by Final Cut Pro for as long as I can remember. Haven't shot any video for a few years but when I did, I just connected it to my 2018 i7 Mac Mini with a USB cable and imported the files into Final Cut with no problems.
Sorry, I don't know anything about the NX800. Does it use the same files as the XDCAM EX? I sort of doubt it. |

Re: Viewing XDCAM files on a iMac?
Importing to FCPX not the problem (I hope) it's viewing the files, the video clips, before I upload to FCPX.
Most clips won't make the cut so will be deleted. The rest will almost certainly need trimming, something I prefer to do in Quicktime Player, and then re-naming. Only then will I import to a FCPX Project. A perfect modus operandi for clips/files from my several Lumix cameras but I'm unsure with XDCAM files. Ron |

Sony's free Catalyst Browse is exactly what you need. I use it after every shoot.
But I have no idea what the system requirements are for the latest version. Try it.

Re: Viewing XDCAM files on a iMac?
Well that's a surprise!
Downloaded "Catalyst Browse", eventually, to this old iMac. Still "studying" Doug Jensen's chapters, before I planned on setting the cam up. Then I thought "just give it a try and see". Camera on "auto", whatever settings that that may imply, and a shot of the back garden in all its current winter gloom and grey. SDXC card into reader slot in the back of the iMac (some old things are still good!) and voila! it worked. Played okay in Quicktime Player, no full metadata but " SL420 ITU709 MPEG-4 3840x2160 50p " and very lifelike colour wise which will be what I'm after. No reference to Catalyst Browse. Tried the same card and clip on my newer Macbook Air, with its M2 chip and no downloaded Catalyst Browse and the same thing, it played okay in QT. I have me doubts about whether 4: 2: 2 clips will play on this iMac, they will on the Air, but that's a computer problem, nowt to do with the NX800. So, quite relieved! Ron |
