Sony's Peter Crithary in Depth Presentation on the F3

Peter Crithary, Marketing Manager for Sony Production, gives a detailed presentation on the F3. Lots of new information on the camera and particularly the new recorder they will be issuing in April, the SR-R1, that is paired to the F3. His presentation clocks in around an hour. If you have been following the camera I would say you want to watch this.

Hypergamma 4 has always been the same as Cinegamma 1 and it has always been available on an EX camera. It is not new. Same with HG2 and CG2. This is not new, nor exclusive to the F3.
S-Log is not at all like Raw. With Raw you really would be recording the original raw sensor data, normally with a 16 bit file (Red Raw is only 12 bit and includes some slight highlight compression), but as HDSDI is restricted to 10 bit you have to process the image before it can be sent down the Dual Link HDSDI. This is done by sampling the sensors linear output using a logarithmic scale which considerably raises the blacks and mid tones compared to the highlights which are allocated a lot less data. This is very different to "recording the raw sensor data". A lot of sensor data is thrown away, but as the data that is thrown away is largely in the highlights this is not normally noticeable. In effect you are applying a logarithmic gamma curve to the sensor output before passing it out of the Dual Link HDSDI.
