PXW-FS5 - No Auto White Balance?

I thought this was odd. Maybe I'm just not hearing Juan correctly.

In this video, Juan Martinez is talking about many of the FS5's features. One thing he states at 15:55 in this video is that the FS5 does NOT have auto white balance?

I'm guessing this is just a simple mistake. Can anyone verify this?

Re: PXW-FS5 - No Auto White Balance?

I don't think I would ever want to use an Auto white balance setting....but you may be right...the way the manual is written suggests that option is only available when the cam is in Full Auto Mode (I wont even go there...)

White balance is covered on pages 52-53 of the manual and also on page 122. I have not had time to play with this on my newly arrived FS5 but it seems to be really well thought out in terms of manual control/setting of WB. You can lock the cam to presets such as Indoor, Outdoor or set the cam to any selected Kelvin temp you want between 2300K and 15000K. There are some other interesting features regarding WB shift for the Indoor and Outdoor presets too (-7 to +7 steps)

Obviously, you can manually set the WB using a grey card etc. - which is what I will be doing most of the time! These can be stored in Memory A or B. The third option on the switch, the Preset WB option, is at 6500K (ex factory default - but I am not sure yet if this can be changed).

I will study this in detail when I next get time - but I am very happy with what the manual indicates are the possible options to WB the FS5.

Re: PXW-FS5 - No Auto White Balance?

For careful and controlled shooting situations, certainly manual white balance is always what you really need. However, for simple run and gun shooting, auto WB has always worked reasonably well for me.

So, you are saying that if you run the FS5 in "full" auto mode, you DO get auto WB?

So,...running manual shutter, gain or iris will force you into "manual" WB only?

Love to see that user manual. Hoping somebody can upload the .pdf soon. I'm planning on a January FS5 purchase
