Yea, they'd be better off with an air bearing or a magnetic bearing. But either way you'd end up carrying an air bottle or battery on your belt to keep it going.

Kerosene would also (probably) work well as a lube. Great preservative. I've reached in and spun turbine blades in a 1950's jet fighter and they still turn so very easy.
