Canon 10D Noise reduction and setup

Does the 10D have CCD noise reduction? I understand it as a fairly common processing feature to reduce CCD noise for things like long exposures, etc. But I can't find reference to it in the book, menus, or online.

Also do I have a lot to gain by setting the camera to Adobe RGB? How does this help?

Thanks for any advice!

Usually it is photon noise, not dark noise, that kills you. There are very good Photoshop plug-ins to remove random noise. I use and recommend Noiseware.

Jeff, I'm not familiar with the 10D but I guess you are talking about the noise reduction for long exposure times? You'll find that in the custum functions (CF) somewhere in the menu.

The normal noise reduction is hard wired in the chip (it's a CMOS chip, by the way) and you cannot switch it on or off.

Whether you use Adobe RGB or sRGB depends on what you are going to to with the pictures. sRGB is preferable, if you want to use them for the web, otherwise I recommend Adobe RGB because the color gamut is somewhat larger than sRGB. However, you can always convert Adobe RGB into sRGB, so personnally I use Adobe RGB. If you take RAWs however, you don't need to worry about the color space as it is determined during processing of the RAW data.

Hi Rainer
I couldn't find the option in Custom Funk; nothing seems to mention 'noise reduction'. I think you are right with the hardwired tidbit.

Adobe RGB... I guess I'm better off using that since I already try avoid handing out camera images that haven't been through Photoshop (there is almost always something that can be done to better them). I'm working more in RAW anyway, so if there's a chance of JPG's looking better I'll do it.

Thanks for the help everyone
