Insurance for a short trip question

I am going on a trip and I am worried about continental airlines losing my bags as they told me they do NOT cover an electronic equipment, only personal items and clothes.

What do y'all suggest I do to cover the equipment I am taking with me?

The value is about 4K

Is this gear used for business or is it considered a hobby? If the latter, talk to your insurance agent to see if it's covered by your homeowners - you might need to add a rider to the policy. If you're paying for the trip by credit card, your card issuer might also have coverage - check with them. Finally, if it's for business uses, talk to your agent about what is called an "Inland Marine" policy that covers losses to business property in transit (even though you're not traveling by boat, the Inland Marine gets its name from the old days when merchants insured shipments traveling on river boats and barges).

My agent recommended an inland marine policy a couple years ago when I was traveling to South America on business with my gear. I had around $10,000 coverage for about $230/yr IIRC. However the agent said if I only wanted the coverage during my trip I could just cancel the policy afterwards and it would be pro-rated.

Check with your agent (I have State Farm), if you only need coverage for a short trip it may be very inexpensive. I decided to keep the policy however to give me a bit of peace of mind whenever I take my camera somewhere.
