Appropriate DVD packaging for retail sales in USA
 

A mate of mine has shot and produced the DVD contents, and I'm actually doing the design work on the packaging for this one. Before you start constructing finished art, one needs to know the art dimensions and hence which case type is being used.

Which brings me to this question ...

What packaging is used for DVD sales in the USA? Is it a straight DVD/CD "jewel case"? Or do you go more for the wallet style?

This product is a video on extreme stretching and is going to be sold to a comparably niche market of anyone from ballerinas to athletes to regular gym junkies (and marathon runners) who want to recover faster. Could go in to either KMart style retail environments or retail shops within gyms, golf clubs etc.

What I am wanting to get out of this is the most appropriate thing to have ready for potential distributors who wish to take on the title. The worst thing would be for it to be the wrong size for the shelving, etc.

Most DVD sales in the USA are in a keep case/poly-case/Amray case (File:Amaray-case.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Many DVD releases are also in the similarly sized, yet more ecologically friendly "digipack" (DVDs in DVDigipaks)

Here in the US, we do see DVDs in all kinds of packaging, but to most DVDs are in a case that has a 190mm × 135mm dimension with varying thicknesses. That's roughly the same height as a VHS tape, allowing DVDs to use the same shelving.

Go to discmakers.com and read thru thier tutorial on packaging, artwork preparation, templates for dvd disc printing and jacket design as well as dvd master specifications. Also, for retail you will need a barcode and shrinkwrap for DVD case. Hope this helps.
