Shooting on the Streets of NY

Hi All,

Weds, I will be heading north. I wonder if anyone has any advice on shooting/hauling an XL1 on the streets of NYC. Anyone ever have any problems/stories shooting there? Not talking a big production here, just following a group around with the camera.

Any pointers would be nice. Many thanks in advance.

No problem---there are certain places in the city where they won't let you set a tripod--and of course, you aren't going to walk into Gracie Mansion and ask the Mayor for an interview---other then that, I have never had any real problems running and gunning on the streets of N.Y.

Remember the city is cavernous---thus there is lots of shadow in many location-s--a camera mounted fill light is nice----

Have fun, the city is full of interesting images.

Janet Harvey on DVDA shoots in New York and said that someone shooting there should have a lookout in case someone wants to help themselves to your gear.

A tripod also makes a handy and scary weapon if wielded with elan.

There are places in every city where you wouldn't leave an unattended tripod----

Thanks guys

Thanks for the info/advice guys. I am a little nervous because part of my shoot involves being within the madhouse that is the greenwich village Halloween parade. I have an assistant, so hopefully thry will 'have m back' a bit. Anyone ever shot in this thing? Obviously a fill light is a must in this situation.

THanks!
Jason

Dont worry about the parade--I shot it last year-lots of fun-----and the people are friendly---

* * SHOOTING AROUND NYC * *

I am glad to hear you are taking a colleague(s) around with you. Keep an eye on you when you decide to step out into the street.

I've shot with no problems around town.

Fast and light keeps it moving. Leave the unessentials, and if you plan on staying out and about, put your camera in a bag.

Excellent! Rock'N'Roll!

See Yah Around!

Cheers!
