QuickBooks Pro for Mac alternative?

I made the mistake of upgrading to OS X Lion before checking to see what programs would fall by the wayside when I did so. Unfortunately, QuickBooks Pro 2006 no longer works and while I can still run the program on my laptop (not yet upgraded) I thought I'd check and see what other mac users are using for their accounting.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Reed

Online Accounting Software. Free Trial, Free Support | Xero

It's been really good and I got a 3 month free trial to see if it would work for me.

Trick question?
You send them the report file. Account Edge sends the Windows version of the program to your accountant fee of charge so they can read the files directly if they'd like.

The program can export in various industry standard files as needed too.

Not a trick question at all. I send a portable QB file to my accountant for review and he does things like correct entries, set up accounts where needed, etc. I don't see the benefit of using software that isn't supported by your accountant. Could depend on the complexity of your books I suppose.

AccountEdge seems much more accountant friendly than QuickBooks. I think it handles much greater complexity (not that I use all of that). There's also none of that Mac vs Windows version feature difference that Intuit seems to foist on their Mac users.

We use Quickbooks on a PC, which my wife uses to maintain our "master" books. But on the mac I invoice and receive payments using Freshbooks.com (and the companion minibooks iPhone app). It's a solid combo that doesn't annoy our bookkeeper but also makes it super-easy for my clients to receive, track and pay invoices.

While I edit on Macs, I actually have a separate Windows PC for Quickbooks and other admin work. Just works out easier. You can pick up a Dell quite cheaply.

Or you can always use Bootcamp or Parallels. But I find a separate PC the best solution so you can be getting on with admin while you are rendering etc.

If you're cash strapped there are companies who specialise in selling refurbished PC's for good prices. I got the latest box from new but the last one (which was killed by a power cut) was a refurb that cost next to nothing,. Came with a clean and licensed XP install. Was great and the only reason I didn't go that route again was because I wanted a higher spec machine with Windows 7 on it.
