I've been doing a lot of thinking about this. I think I'm still going to go forward with the business, but probably from a different approach. Instead of buying all the equipment I might need up front, a professional office, massive advertising campaign, etc., I'll just buy what I need as I go. That way, if it doesn't work out, I can change my focus because it gets too late.
Dave, unless you're going to post your thoughts here anyway, I will be emailing you because I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks! Vince |

I have some news for you... You don't need ANY equipment at all. The first mistake everyone makes coming into this business is buying toys first and getting jobs later. Go get some jobs. You can outsource everything. Rent the gear, which incidentally usually comes with experienced folks included :) Try editing at home or lease time from a local post house. You'll need the money to finance the production until you get paid, trust me. Sure, outsourcing dilutes your profits, but until you can come up with a serious volume of work, you are much better off. Most of the large commercial production houses I know have the following equipment... a telephone line. What you do need, is a good photographer, a good director, a good sales team, and a good demo reel. If you can't get any jobs now, without any gear at all, what makes you think you'll be able to get them with?

LOL, I was getting ready to post some advice and now see this has turned into an investment thread! NICE! Just know that pretty much every spent on an indie film is lost, I think the chance of recouping is less than 2% or so. Docs can be made for much less and have a niche but devoted audience. I have already done one doc that will gross more than 10X the production budget and have another in the works that could do the same. That is a good way to start off... get some help though, it takes more than just money!

Amazing thread----I love the way it has evolved into a thread with indies looking for financing---its hillarous!
|
C'mon you guys... don't rain on their parade (LOL). I for one, think that if all goes well, they could recoup as much as 5% of the original investment.
