Itemizing an invoice

I am considering making a series of training videos. Is it wise to itemize the invoice so the customer knows where all the money went or should I simply quote the total?

You should itemize your services to the client. Makes for better record keeping on your end as well.

That's just my opinion, and it's how I invoice my clients.

I itemize based on what the client needs to see. I want them to know where their money goes, and understand what my time is worth.

But, I do tend to keep the "items" fairly generic. I've found that clients tend to not care about how many tapes used, what that light cost to rent, etc.

Also itemize the items you include for "free" so they get a sense of the value added services and goods you are providing. Just list them each separately and the charge as $0.00.

(e.g.) Custom DVD jacket insert....$0.00

That way they will understand that it took some time and effort to provide it to them and they are not being charged for it.

Big companies NEVER fail to use this easy marketing gimmick to increase the perception of "value-added service".
