I still haven't gotten around to writting a little newbies guide to doing "enhancements" in Vegas 4.
Here's a sample of what some tweaking in Vegas 4 can do. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-.../brickwall.jpg Color Curves - Gradient Map - HSL Adjust - Bump Map Keep in mind that "film doesn't do red well". |
A few more film-look tips:

Alex, you have exceeded your bandwidth time. I guess we have to wait until next month to view the clip, uh? :)

Nah, that place gives you 5MB of transfer per day... I updated the link to the picture...
and here's a couple more, since i'm bored (not as good). http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-6/232350/hairy.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...0/sidewalk.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...50/stoned3.jpg Thats why I love Vegas 4.0. :D |
Looks great alex, post your methods on how you did them, in some detail.

These are great tips, guys. I wish I could contribute, but I'll just have to leech for now.
Also, good shots, Alex. Thanks for posting. |
Great examples Alex !!!
I recently started experimenting with HSL and contrast using Vegas and the before and after results are just amazing. Saturation really brings out the richness of the colors. Now I'll experiment with color curves, gradiant map and bump map effects to keep tweaking. Thanks |
Anyone seen a film by the name of Spun that recently made the Indie festival circuit? It's got some names in it such as John Leguizamo, Brittany Murphy:
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0283003 The screen caps that Alex put up have a distinctly similar texture to the texture of this film. I think it was a 16mm production. I'm a big 16mm film fan, so good job Alex. |
Ok Alex, I've learned the Color Curves stuff (you had post a pic with setings) and I like doing that to my clips! Now you have to show me how to use Gradient Map, HSL Adjust and the Bump Map!!! :)

Hey guys, i'll write a little article explaining what you can do with the gradient map and all that... expect it up tonight.

Getting access usage limits on all those links :-(

Here's the little article you guys wanted. Check out the post I made for it. Hosting is needed, after about 200 views, it will be a dead link.
http://www.freewebs.com/vegas4/vegas4.htm Now I just need to get some people to make some videos with me so I can actually use all this crap on something worth it. :D |
Alex, thanks for the article. I'll have to check Premiere to see if I can now play with some of my images like that.
Keep up the work. |
Great little tut! I find it really timely too, because I've finally gotten sick and fed up with Premiere, and am trying out Vegas 4 for the first time.
I think it was because of a recent tiny short I edited on a Final Cut Pro 3 workstation. I realized how archaic Premiere really has become. Yeah I know FCPro is a much more expensive tool, but that's not my point. Premiere just feels old and clunky now. Especially now in the day of XP with its slick interfaces and faster, XP optimized applications, (which Premiere is not). I have high hopes for Vegas... |
Thanks Alex. I recently upgraded to Vegas 4 from Video Factor and then Vegas 3, so I'm going to try a lot of these techniques on my next short. For the first short I did, I simply altered the color curves and brightness, but didn't go beyond that.

I have some hope for v7 (especially a more usable motion dialogue). We shall see. |
Yeah, I expect Adobe to do something good with Premiere 7, since Vegas 4 has taken over. Gotta love competition. Many months ago, Adobe contacted someone I talk to online and asked him if he would like to be a beta tester for Premiere 7, since the guy said he liked his videos, his website, and knew he used Premiere...i'm pretty sure he said yes. Hopefully he did go through with it, so I can get some word on if it's good or not. :D

Thanks Alex! :)
