Shooting XH A1 and Z1 progressive together?
 

Hi,
I'm sure this is thoroughly dealt with in this forum, but I just haven't got the time to browse right know - so please bear with me.
Starting tomorrow, we're shooting for a TV-show (PAL) with one Canon XH A1 and one Sony Z1. The plan was to shoot with two Canons and 25f (p), but one camera had to be replaced -and in the speed of things - with a Sony Z1. I'm now thinking about shooting interlaced just to be on the safe side, since I believe the two cameras handle progressive quite differently. Any quick advice on this would be much appreciated.

The Z1 doesn't shoot progressive. It does try to simulate the motion of film in interlaced footage with its 'Cineframe' feature. Some hate this feature and won't use it, others will use it in the absence of a progressive scan shooting option.

I'd probably shoot interlaced (without the Cineframe feature) with both cameras. If it's a TV show then there's no film out, so progressive scan shooting isn't strictly necessary. Do some tests to see how the output from the cameras matches though. They've probably both got their own thing going on when it comes to capturing colour and might need tuning to make them cut together better.

Thank you Nic. My thoughts exactly. I know that the XH A1 has an astonishingly range of presets for such a lowprized camera, and we have elaborated some with them. Not so used to the Z1 though. I think we'll have to rely on post production, since there's no time for testing. The cameras are already in place some 5000 miles from home, so it's just a question of deciding i or p and then roll. The rest we'll live with in post.
