Another DOF Post: Blurry suuroundings.

This subject is a hot one. I think this question may have been answered, but I thought I'd post what I'm looking for.

When filming with the Canon XL, what setting should one use when specifically focusing on one object, but wanting the other objects around it to be blurry?

I saw BOB posted these settings:

Camera Settings:
Manual Mode
ND Filter (off)
Gain 0% (not auto)
F stop 1.8
Auto Focus (off)
Shutter Speed 1/60

Do these settings give me my desired effect?

Thank you!

Todd,

There is no way to say thesesettings will give you the desired effect as there are more factors that influence the DOF, such as focal length, distance from subject distance of subject from background.

The longer the focal length, the less DOF, the more distance between the subject and the background the more the background will be blurred.

The best way is to go out and try different settings as it will all depend on the setting and the light available at the time.

I'd also be inclined to set the gain to -3db as this will produce stronger blacks and a cleaner picture.

Todd,

Please take your time to read and respond to these threads:

At these two we have/are discussing this topic at great length.
Since both are very fresh and people have talked at great length
there already it is wisest to keep it there. Otherwise we keep
repeating.

Thank you.
