That's a good article, Rob,clearly from an experienced mixer. True enough, there has been a growing dismissal of the sound department's needs. I actually consider myself a notably sound-friendly DP compared to many I have worked for. On this recent feature I bent over backwards to accomodate sound issues that should have been anticipated in advance, right up to the limits of my patience. I could go on and on but I won't. I'll end up chewing off the bezel of my laptop.

Film tastes better!! hahahahahahaha Charles, as a DP you should know what side of the film holds the emulsion and shouldn't have to be licking the film to find out.
Or are you that addicted to the job? This is way off topic, but do you know a Gent named Erick Green? He is a DP up in LA and since its a small town (sort of) I wondered if you know him. |
The name is sort of familiar, it's possible we might have worked together on something but I can't recall.
Update on "Perfect Sleep": the footage is being loaded at full HDCAM resolution into the edit bay, requiring something like 12 terabytes of storage--yikes! Apparently the post team were very gung-ho about cutting this at full res so they can bounce the footage into the effects pipeline without having to re-digitize (the deck rental is prohibitive). I haven't seen any of the footage since we wrapped but I've heard a lot of good things from those who have. |

Wouldn't 12 tb of storage cost a lot more than the rental? Just curious. Was that shot on the CineAlta? heath |
Actually I think it was only 9 tb, but they may have to have a separate non-RAID drive for some overflow material. I think the idea is that the production company purchased the storage for this and future projects but don't want to also invest in the deck just yet; my guess is they will eventually lease one once they get deeper into their HD production.
