Best of 2004 -- Video-to-Film Blow Ups!
 

Hey folks,

I've been perusing these threads for awhile, and I've noticed a lot of scattered discussions about different cameras, new software, etc...I'd love it if some people jumped in with their favorite solution to going out to film. And, though the advice has been great and I've taken note of all of it, let's please limit this to a discussion about hardware and software, and not counseling about shooting properly, using good light, etc...

So what is it? DVX100A? Any old camera with Magic Bullet? HDV with DV Film?

I'll be shooting a documentary that will go out to film eventually, so there is some selfish desire here, but I'm also interested in people's experiences in general.

It would be great if you've actually seen your solution blown up on the big screen, but educated opinions are welcome too!

The best, ofcourse, would be to shoot in 35 or 16mm film. After
that resolution (and framerate, so 24p would be more interesting
than 60i for example), so it would probably go like this (at this
point in time with the current camera's available):

1. 35mm film

2. 16mm film / all the professional HD camera's

3. 720 pixels 24p (progressive): JVC HDV camera

4. 480 pixels 24p DV camera with true 16:9: Canon XL2

5. other 480 pixel 24p camera's: DVX100a

I've not mentioned the new Sony HDV camera since it shoots in
1080i (interlaced!) and does not have a 24 frame per second
option.

p.s. this list is purely on resolution / ease to work with, I have no
experience in blowing stuff up to film myself.

You should probably talk to the place where you are planning to do your blowup. They should know what's best and are probably eager to do business with you considering how much the transfer is going to cost.
