Example of "Film Look" done in post

Hi,

Below is an image conversion I did in post.

http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1936453

I really believe that the image on the right resembles the look of film.

The only thing now missing is the shallow DOF and the MOTION of film.

Above post work done in After Effects

Bruce A. Christenson March 23rd, 2003 11:58 PM

It looks like you have the shallow DOF already.

Why is it missing? How did you do it in post?

Jayson Brown March 24th, 2003 12:00 AM

Hi Bruce,

I meant the only thing missing from the original video was DOF. I had to fake it in post using gaussian blur.

Regards
Jayson

Ok, how do you do a gaussian blur on the background but not the subject? In a single frame, you can handdraw a mask I guess. Can AE make the mask follow the subject accurately, for real clips?

If you can do that, then a 24P camera or a de-interlacer/resampler package could fix the motion issue, and you'll have it all!

Bruce,

Have to shoot against a green screen for this effect to fully work. A nightmare of course, but we will do anything to produce a "filmlook".

I like the blurred out background but the image is highly contrasted.

The cig seems to have "jaggies" to it. Is that a result of shrinking the image to a small JPEG? Could you post images that are direct exports from the DV footage (720x480)?
