It's all your faults!

Thought that subject title might get you attention

Hi everyone, still fairly new around here, and I am in no way a video professional, just starting out in this hobbies of mine. I have always been a movie buff, and a tech geek. Received a cheap Sony digital8 camera as a gift, now I bit by th bug. I'm in the process of building a kick a$# NLE system, be for I buy myself a pro-sumer camera, but both of those topics are for a different area.

What I meant by "It's all your faults" is, like I said before I have always been a movie buff (been in the middle of writing my first screenplay for sometime now), but never really paid much attention to the differences in film, and television. Thanks to everyone here I'm now ruined. I sit around looking at DOF, and colors, and god forbid "Film Like" qualities of everything!!

So now, I too am obsessed, and I don't even have a good camera yet.

I was just wonder out there if anyone has seen the show "Lucky" on the FX channel? I looks like it is filmed in digital, with most shots being hand-held, but every now and again there is some really shallow DOF scenes. If in fact they are shooting digital (most of the show looks like home video to me) how are they getting these really detailed close scenes with such a washed out back round?

An how, just thought I would say hello to all, and once again thanks for adding to my obsession.

I just watched a few minutes of it the other night. It's not really my kind of show, but it seemed like they were obviously going for a "video look" with jerky handheld camerawork. Sort of a nervous style that I personally dislike, but maybe I should give it another chance...
