Estonian music
Margus,
you might (or might not) be surprised to know there's one Estonian composer -- Arvo Pärt -- who has made a name for himself here in the US in new music circles (partly thru the series of recordings on the ECM label). I suppose at this point he's sort of an older-generation composer. Are you aware of anything like a lively new music (or contemporary classical) scene in Estonia in general? -- just curious, as you're the only Estonian I've "met" online. I've enjoyed Pärt's work since many years, and a little bit wonder if he's extremely individualistic (as he can seem to us here), or whether he's in some sense typical of other work also being done? Of course in a way he's very -- how to say? -- retro; as if he were living in an earlier century. Then, too, the emphasis on liturgical music gives a different twist to his work. But evidently he's also done things with contemporary theatre . . . Of course maybe this isn't an area you've looked into. (Pardon the questions, if I make unweildy assumptions based merely on geography.) Relating to DV -- what sort of work / subjects are you focusing on? Largely documentary? cheers, d.i. |
hi David,
I think everybody in Estonia knows Arvo Part,he's a little-bit as a legend here. Never met him personally. As far as I know there is one another estonian music-maker in US, Neeme Jarvi. One of our latest interesting compositors is Erkki-Sven Tyyr, by my oppinion very intriguing. I am myself more as a technician, technical adviser for some projects. I've done editing in one of our local TV stations for some years, now i edit and do camerawork mostly as a hobby and for testing stuff. It was really heart-warming to read your reply. Thanks Margus |
