Should I be on that Excel list? Should I be worried if I'm not??

No sinister motive here, just inefficiency on my part. When I've been through all 228 hits I'll post a list for "England". |

List for England
1 Attachment(s)
Same story as for the Welsh and Scottish lists: this is a result of a search of the members list for "England". I've removed those those whose "last activity" was several years ago though some may still be browsing without logging in. I've also included others picked up from recent posts, plus returns for "London UK" but have still not searched through all the hits for "UK."
Revised complete Excel version attached. Er, Hi Colin...........
Not to put a downer on your Hurculean efforts (as they truly are, I'm absolutely stunned by your thoroughness) but is there something a tad anal about this, considering CH is introduceing some sort of (as yet, revealed but unexplained) regional codes?
Maybe this is the time to ask the big Q of CH? How's they gonna work and what will you be able to do? One important thing I would suggest to anyone on your amazing list: Having been a UK resident for many (many) years, "South East" is not a proper area code for posters. Either is "England" Either is "UK" Either is "NW England" (or any other of the possibilities) Either is "London" Either is "County" (take your pick) Either is "IoM" In short, guys and guyesses, I'm not asking for street names and numbers, but you all know how it works there, a county (without the "R") can be a darn big place. London is gigantic. The "South East" is bloody humungous. (and so are any of the other variants). So, hit that "Contact Us" button at the bottom of your screen and update your address details. The more people know about other people (within reason) the better, and when it comes to locations in the UK, invaluable. Colin, keep up the good work, but do ask CH what gives with the regional codes yourself. CS |
Hi Chris,
Just one comment. I'm always a bit careful of giving too much location information away, especially when I list all my expensive gear in my profile. Anyone, (ANYONE!!!) can access this information and then a quick web search of the UK electoral role and your address and sometimes even telephone number are in their dirty thieving hands. I'm ex-directory but I know it's still possible. Then it's just a quick call to ensure no one's in, a broken window and the stuff is theirs. That's why I just list "Cambridgeshire" now (but was slightly concerned to see my location a bit more specific on a version of this list a few days ago). Once I posted my location, then had second thoughts but then I could not edit that post to remove that information so it's eventually appeared on Colin's otherwise excellent list. Until this is remedied I've cleared my profile. And to the thieves. I do have a fully monitored, very good house alarm, good watchful neighbours and live close to the local Police station....my huge dog is also an asset. And if you get past that lot there will be another unpleasant surprise awaiting you that will remain secret. One of my video buddies found me by personal message on this site. After a bit of e-mail I satisfied myself he's OK...... then over many, many pints in the pub later (not all on the same night but over many many nights!) we talked endlessly about our video interests/stuff we both want to do in the future .....and now we are working together on some of this stuff and having great fun! So bottom line is, in the spirit if this thread, why not try and meet up with someone in your own area and see if it works for you? We find that 2 people, and sometimes there's 3 of us - even better, bounce shot and editing ideas off each other raising the quality of our work to new heights. It also helps to have someone to lug the gear round with you/watch the camera while you go get a sandwich/coffee/go have a slash (that's slang for going to the restroom by the way) etc. too! And multi-cam shoots give you so much more creative power in editing. |

I'm so sorry. As soon as I saw this post I edited the list I posted and the Excel attachment to remove the extra detail. I'm inclined to agree with your views and I should have thought this one out a bit better. I hope there's no harm done. |
Personally, I don't have any problem with giving my place as a county, but I do think members should have the right to choose whether they give a county or a country as their location.
Likewise there is no obligation to list the equipment you use, but it is still helpful for people to see what you are using when posting on a forum that is not specifically for that equipment eg UWOL, or weddings etc. BTW I'm curious to see that I am listed under England as well!! |
Tough question you got going here, had me thinking to pull myself out of DV info.net
Pretty cool though discussing, and searching details of the business with all types who know the goods. I need the info now. Books are good but this is evolving, every day, every minute. Security is key. Locks, monitors, insurance, all necessary. Dogs, neighbors, spent shotgun shells from target practice at the doorstep, good deterence. I have some ancestors from Scotland and the Island of Mull so greetings! |
"Spent shotgun shells from target practice at the doorstep"......Now, Bill, that would get me locked up in no time in the UK!!!
Colin, thanks for updating your lists - and no harm done - but you see the issue now. I think county (or big city name) is as close as one would want to go....but as Annie said it's really up to the individual member how they want it. And, BTW Annie, Pembrokeshire is about as near to England as one can get in Wales culturally, but not geographically! Then there are all the legal implications we have over this list and it's management, storage, distribution, deletion (due to our Data Protection Act). You don't want someone trying to sue you when all you were trying to do was facilitate interaction amongst us (mostly non-thieving) Brits! Shame but that's the way it is - especially since the crime/burgulary rate will climb steeply now we're heading for a deep recession so let's not make it too easy for the ^&%$$£"&^. |
2 islanders, opposite side of the globe, having a talk over a pint, good stuff
|
Holy Cow, it took 25 posts to go from New Boot to Regular Crew, now what about the surfing video crew in the UK?
|
Bill
And then you become a major player at 200 posts - as I happened to me last night. Andy Yes, Little England beyond Wales where the main excuse I have for not learning Welsh is that hardly anyone here knows speaks it, so it would be hard to practise. |

Whoops, wasn't trying to start WW3 here...
And Andy, I think you're pretty safe with Cambridgeshire.
I forgot the paranoia about crime in the UK (strange, only been out of the place less than 3 years and it seems a million miles and a century ago). We currently live in a hamlet out of town, don't need to lock cars, doors or anything else. Bit of a change from Tottenham, North London, where an open door would have any and all contents nicked in less time than a blink, or even sooner. Wasn't expecting anyone to give the thieves an open book, just to make their geopgraphical locations a bit clearer to other DVinfo - ers. Makes suggestions a bit easier and meeting up heaps so, is my guess. Anyway, it was just a suggestion, not a command, so do what you wish. Annie: Hey, the UK owns you, stop gripeing! And who wants to speak Welsh anyway? Bill: Er, spent shotgun shells at the door? Sounds like a lot of country places here. Rabbits, I'm told. My question: Who sold the rabbits shotguns? CS |
yeah, and who taught them to shoot at human's front doors point blank range!!!

Update on DVinfo Brits
1 Attachment(s)
Welcome to Steve Pope who brings the number of active Brits I have found to 300. Some names have been removed from earlier versions due to information received about them being no longer active.
Please post if you have any further news or wish some details removed (or want to go "ex -directory" altogether!) |
In London
Hi there Colin, I'm in London, so you can add me to your list!

From London (and NYC)
It seems rude not to say hello to fellow Brits.
I am mostly based in London. Currently filming industry colleagues / professionals for a national education and training website at www dot uk film net dot org which is partly funded by the UKFilm Council and supported by Skillset, the BBC and the BFI. Would love to hear from specialists / experts willing to donate a little time to "piece to cameras" or allowing "on location" "how to's" to help young film makers learn the ropes. (Some small expenses can be covered) Particularly interested in short film makers, DOPs, those using DOF adapters and Steadicam/glidecams. I'll post news as we go. Site is currently being built behind the link above :) |
Something odd about that website address Dom unless it has no space between UK and film and net. Then the site doesn't open up.
But I might help your cause in teaching? I write a technical column for every issue of Film and Video Maker mag. tom. |
the url...

Not sure why you would want to disguise it - while promoting it - but to be polite I have made it clearer without making it machine readable; http://www . ukfilmnet . org Kind regards Dave |
Hello All,
Just found the thread (belatedly). I'm based west of Bristol. Nice and quiet around here. I'm working with and XH-A1, EOS-5D mkII and lots of stills gear (Phase One / Canon / Alpa) There was talk in earlier posts about good dealers - I would wholeheartedly recommend Simon Beers's videogear.co.uk - helpful, friendly and they don't sting you on delivery like most. Hope to meet some of you one day. Nick. |
Hi Nick.
Welcome aboard, you've joined the right forum. I'm from Bristol also, Hanham. Whereabouts are you. Paul. |
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the welcome. I'm based at Redhill (quiet side of the airport), but I have an office/studio at Blagdon. I've been sort of lurking for a while, but not really made much of a contribution. Feel free to give me a call and drop by (details on my web site) for a coffee / drink. Nick. |
Nick that'd be cool.
Nice website, cracking pictures. What sort of video do you shoot/ want to shoot ? You should put your website name as your signature so it shows below your postings. Paul. |
Glad to see that I'm still on the Welsh list - even though I haven't been a regular poster for some time.
Anyway, I'm still active, directing tv drama and shooting the odd doc in between! |

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm around most of the time for the next few weeks, so give me a bell. I have been playing with the XH-A1 and FCP for around a year and want to put together some journalistic pieces with stills and video + some shorts for some of my clients. I'm suffering without tracking AF (for cars) and struggling to get a sensible sound setup. I have an NTG1 and several other mics + Fostex FR1, but sound is such a new dimension from what I'm used to. Hello,
My name is Alex, I am from South UK, near Portsmouth (Gosport). Thought I would introduce myself, I have not used this board before. I am planning to shoot my first feature, and would love to hear from anyone in my local area whether you are a producer to pyrotechnic expert! Cheers, Alex. |

If you check back a page or so you will see (attached to my post of Sept 16th) a link to a list of DVinfo brits. You're about to be on it if that's OK and you will find a few people near you. I try to keep it up to date in case it might be useful to someone. |
Hi Colin, yes thats fine to add me to the list.
Let me check the brit listing out this evening, I just found my notebook screen cracked and bleeding, thats what you get when you let your younger brothers and sisters use the new PS3 and get excited in your edit suit... |
Evening,
I was wondering if anyone here happenes to be an expert in the lighting or audio fields. I am sourcing contacts (Portsmouth/Brighton/Southampton preferably, London also interested) for sub contracting and also an indie film project. If you might be interested in working together please send me a personal message. Thanks, Alex Brown. |
I've been away from the list recently, but welcome Alex.

Hello all!
My name is Ryan, from Norwich, Norfolk. I'm looking to start my own video production company but have never had any formal training, just a few years of experience and a lot of determination and passion, so I'll be the guy asking stupid questions :) Ry |
Welcome Ryan,
I'm in the same boat, but there are plenty of great and knowledgeable people here, so you'll be made welcome. Enjoy! Nick |
Thanks Nick,
I see you use an XH-A1, how is it? I've got an XL2 until I've got the money to upgrade :) Ry |
