ACK! It's the "new" guy!
Hi everyone! I'm a "almost" normal kinda guy. I've been working in this DV realm for many years. Started with the Amiga Toaster when it 1st came out and have been making digital 3D and video for some time now.

I have over 30 years experience working in broadcasting for all the major networks covering sports, music and related fields including entertainment, industrial, and some corporate environments. I am a “long lens, high speed specialist”, "TD", Tape op and Chyron op with many years experience in racing and sports. I also have many years of experience in Golf (PGA, LPGA, PGA Tour and PGA Tour Productions). ..and yes, it really IS hard to track that little ball.

Included in this are the “normal” sporting events such as thousands of games of Baseball, Football, Hockey and Soccer for ESPN, NBC etc, which has been my “bread & butter” most of these years. My Wife is also a producer/director and worked with me for many years on the road with the networks till she became tired of waking up and not knowing where she was or where she was going. So, She took a management job in production with the local cable company here. Working full time on the road for 30 + years has been exciting but now I can "sit home in my bunny slippers and undies and produce, edit and checks come in the mail". Sometimes life IS good!

I am also a Jimmy Jib owner and operator with many years of experience in both studio and field productions. Currently I'm producing music videos for some record companys with the Jib and during the winter months I work concerts, football and large scale indoor events. Next year I'll be in Asia and Europe working with some bands on tour making music videos.

I'm located in Louisville Kentucky and within hours of most major cities in the east and southeast. Since this isn't the "Meca" of sporting events I have to travel a lot but that comes with the job.

"Been there, done that" seem to be my motto anymore and the nice thing about DV is, "it's all about YOU". Whats inside of you and your creativity and drive. You have a blank canvas with all the brushes and paints...now...find something and make a video!

If you like, you can go to my web site and find out a little more about me and my more "professional side" feel free. I hope to know everyone here better in the comming months and look foward to helping when I can and learning when I don't.

Hey Steve it's nice to know your up there (someone close) I'm in Burkesville KY on the TN boarder. Was a pro still photographer turned activist/organic farmer and now I'm combining the two. Hope to meet you someday but not in the bunny slippers.

Welcome, Chris

Thanks Chris,
It's good to know others are near too. The Bunny slippers are more for the Wife kinda thing. Hmmmmm...A still photographer turned activist/organic farmer...now thats kinda different...how do you combine the two?

Rob Lohman October 30th, 2002 09:34 AM

Welcome aboard Steven! It took me a while to read through your
post (yes, that is a good thing). Great to have another person
join with so much experience! When you come through Holland/
The Netherlands on your Europe tour let me know!

Enjoy the forums!

Hey Steve,
When I say activist, I mostly teach nature awareness & will do talks for the sierra club & others on more gentile ways (ecologically speaking) of accomplishing a goal of prosperous living without killing ourselves in the process, though I can get riled if there's something really stupid going on. Through what I do I've really come to see just how separated we've become from the world that sustains us, so in the 2 main projects I'm working on right now I'm trying to take the ordinary natural world around us and imbue it with the magic that is life. I've seen it time and time again in my talks that if you can combine the right imagery with the right words it's as if a fog lifts from a persons eyes and it's almost like they're seeing the world for the first time.

So in short I'm trying to do documentaries of our ordinary encounters in nature and make them extraordinary (which is my experience when I'm outside).

Here's a part of the opening narrative to give you some idea.

The mere word can evoke disgust in many Americans. Though most of us in this country live a relatively bug free existence, they are a major part of mine. They are my friends (praying mantis), my enemies (cucumber beetles) and my companions (jumping spider).
They have been awe inspiring to me (the perfection of a honey comb). They over-whelm me with their overabundance and diversity. They cause me a tremendous amount of work and frustration and they cause me pain (in a typical potato digging I’ll get stung by 20-30 sweat bees). I’ve killed them, saved them and even bought them.

They bring beauty and joy on the wings of butterflies, yet the occasional scorpion can still give me a touch of the willies. They’re a part of my life like the flowers in spring, and they’ve made me a better human being by showing me that they are not insignificant, just small and numerous.

I'm truly impressed by your writing and creativity. Seldom does one possess the tools to combine the visuals and verbiage to convey this important message.

Just to paraphrase a bit...

"They are my friends , my enemies, and my companions. They have been awe inspiring to me, They over-whelm me with their overabundance and diversity. They cause me a tremendous amount of work and frustration and they cause me pain. I’ve (wanted to) kill them, saved them and even (!) bought them.

They’re a part of my life like the flowers in spring, and they’ve made me a better human being by showing me that they are not insignificant, just small and numerous".

Uhhhh...Chris...That's what I've thought about Women for some time now. I guess we have more in common that we though....sorry...I just couldn't resist....hahahahahaa.

But seriously, your words are well written and concise. I'm sure by reading them your visuals must also be as stunning and poignant.

To represent man and the lesser known (but equally important) equations in a educational aspect to the unknowing masses can only be considered "honorable".

I look forward to knowing you better!

Thanks Steven,
Me too.

Welcome Steven!
OK, enough of the formalities; make yourself useful! <g> Seriously, though, we'd sure like to have your thoughts on this thread:

Hey Chris, I am a former entomologist and enjoy doing macro video of insects. I use the Canon XL-1 with 1.6 extender and close-up filters. I have mantis, butterflies, dragonflies spikers, ants ets. If you need some insect footage let me know. Bob

Bunny slippers? hehehe... I think I'm gonna like you... Welcome to the neighborhood Steven!

Steven Wills February 20th, 2003 03:55 PM

The Wife hates it that I can sit at home (in my Bunnie slippers and skivvies) working and make money but she never complains when it time to spend it!

Hey Steven, i saw you in louisville a month or two ago. My freind was filming for a bmx video and i guess acted like a jerk or something. Small world.

Steven Wills May 10th, 2004 06:00 AM

Yeah, Seems it was a misunderstanding on his part. I'm always looking to help people and he thought something else. Dunno. Yeah, small world!

Joe Carney May 10th, 2004 09:00 PM

I once spent a day in Louisville. It was the longest year of my life. hehehe. Welcome to dvinfo. Glad to have you.

Here in Louisville it is clean, quiet and we have very low crime.

We also have lots of work...seems many can't say that right now.

I'll take all of this I can!
