Taking off to Australia-- tips/suggestions from local DVI'ers?

My friend and I are taking a trip to Australia this summer, and I was wondering if any local Aussies here could suggest places to go/ things to do. We're trying to keep mostly away from the heavy tourist spots and looking for stuff more or less "off the beaten path." If anyone would like to grab a pint somewhere, that would be cool too.

We'll be in Melbourne first for a week and then we're planning on taking a plane up to the Northeast and working our way back down the east coast. We're completely open to any suggestions...

Almost forgot-- We'll be there July 20 through August 13.

Cheers!

Matt, I live in Melbourne, its a great city. I have just returned after 15 months working at a regional Television Station on the Victoria NSW border.
If your interested in the coast theres the Great Ocean Road, which is kinda touristy but pretty awesome. You can go past Bell's Beach (as seen in point break).

There is also the Dandenongs up the other direction, which is great (im told for bushwalking etc.

Cant really think of anything else at this point but there's heaps.
-let me know when your here, im up for a beer!
Cheers,
Ben

How far North are you going Matt? I took my first real trip north of Brisbane recently. My favourite spots were...

Just north of Cairns (the drive up the coastal road is nice)...

Scuba diving or snorkelling (anywhere up north) is highly recommended...

West of Cairns (up into the Atherton tablelands) has some nice photo ops...

Hinchenbrook Island (further south, south of Townsville) is the world's largest island national park (plenty of bushwalking, serious and not so), and is home to Qlds 4th highest peak...

I also really liked the Whitsunday Islands. A number of day tours are offered out to the islands (mostly national parks), which offer gorgous beaches and scenic walks.

My trip was filled with a healthy mix of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, islands, beaches, and a lotta sun. Each destination seemed offer touristy and non touristy spots.

Wow, very cool!

We were talking about flying to Cairns from either Melbourne or Adelaide... probably Adelaide. I'll have to show my friend those pictures.

Thanks!

Good to know.

I'm kind of curious--- every country/part of the world seems to have some of their own slang for types beer and serving sizes. Of course there's the (mostly) universal "pint", but are there any terms specific to Australia?

From friends of mine that were down there, based on the amount of beer they consumed, I'm pretty sure something like DecaLiters my be appropriate, but not sure about that.:)

Matt in Australia different states have different terminologies for asking for a certain glass size of beer. middy, schooner, pot, pint etc. Order a bottle of corona with a slice of lime instead much easier:)

Either that or just ask for a "cold one". It will generally get a beer of some sort in your hand pretty quickly. Just had a look at the dates. Welcome to Australia.

Cheers

Al
