Converting VHS–>DVD (need help giving advice to friend)
There's a friend of mine at work & here's what he wants to do: He wants to be able to convert his old VHS tapes into DVDs with the aid of his computer. I could have pointed him in the right direction confidently if we were dealing with the Mac computer platform and the surrounding group of software. However, he has a PC. Because my experience with PC computers is fairly minimal, I didn't want to give him wrong advice. Are there some PC users around here that could give me some adivce to pass along here? Thanks.

I'm sure this could be done with a variety of capture cards or firewire gadgets. However, if he has very many tapes to burn to disk he really should consider buying a DVD recorder. This will be a lot easier and won't tie up his PC for long periods of time. I also suspect that the results will be better. My recorder (Sony RDR-GX7) has a bunch of special menu controls that are designed to reduce noise and improve quality when burning VHS and broadcast TV to DVD.
