Framing a speaker. Do we include the man bun?

Had this happen earlier this year. It was a conundrum I never expected to have to deal with.

Would you have cropped it off? I was sorely tempted. :-)

If it was somebody famous, or somebody i got on with, I’d just ask, telling them if I frame the shot normally, you will look very thin and viewers might think it looks a little weird. If they said they wanted the ‘look’, I’d go with it. If it was someone who genuinely deserved looking like a prat, I’d go with it. The explanation would only go to the people who could take the question. Like framing two people having a conversation, looking at each other when one has lips that cast their chin into shadow. They're already deluded into thinking they look beautiful. No way am I telling them they look ridiculous, they dont need my help.

This fella looks a t*t already. Show him off!

We actually had very little time to set up at the venue as we just made it through the flood waters before the highway was closed by the police. Had just enough time to set up and that was it, plus having no idea who all of the talent at this conference were going to be. Courtesy of the flooding, some of the speakers had to be zoomed in instead of appearing live. It was a fun one, and the show must go on.

This fella is a trés hip youth pastor. Nice enough bloke.

Let the rule of thirds guide you. On a medium shot like yours, If he was wearing a top hat, I would be trimming it for sure.

Man bun = top hat. That's a great perspective. :-)

You also might find some pointers by searching for "Yeoman Rand" from the original Star Trek. :-D

I see. And there are yet other historical films where this has been handled.

BTW, too much head room in this shot. The rule of thirds (vertically) only applies up to the point where there is excessive headroom, then you have to frame for balance.

As for cropping the man-bun. Totally depends on the framing of the shot. If it gets cropped, fine, if not, that is fine too. All depends on how tight the framing is. Never frame for hair or hats.

Sage advice, right there.
