Traveling with a Tripod

Recently checked my Bogen 525/503 combo on a flight. Used the padded soft bag that came with the kit. The equipment came through okay, but I'm wondering if subjecting the sticks and head to the abuse of an airline's conveyor belts, luggage carousels, and baggage handlers, with only a soft bag for protection, is wise in the long run?

I really hate those bulky hard cases sometimes used to transport pro-sized pods, having lugged one around the country for several shoots, and would rather stick with the soft bag.

Any suggestions? Anyone checking their pod in for a plane flight, and using a soft bag to transport the gear? Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for any advice.

Bruce Johnson uses a hard-shell golf case with wheels. And he also added 1" foam in the inside of the case. I believe the case is large enough so that he can stuff other gear in there as well.

golf case

I love the brilliant idea of the golf case with the wheels!
It can keep so much things and it looks sophisticated.

But in between, next week i will go for holidays and take my monopod with me and will not even think about my tripod ^_*

I ordered a mikemuff from:
http://www.mikemuff.com/index.shtml. It seems to be great value for money. I Hope it will arive in time.
