Manfrotto 701HDV

Hi
Looking for a new tripod head, would this one be OK for the XL2.

Allan-

Sorry for no one responding sooner.....the 701 head is way under your minimum for he XL 2. You want to buy a head based on the maximum potential load you might put on it. The min. on the XL 2 would be around 7-8 lbs. The max. would be 15+ lbs (matte box, follow focus, wide angle converter, on-board monitor, etc). With Manfrotto, I wouldn't go with anything less than the 503HDV head....the best way to buy Manfrotto is in the packages with sticks and a bag.

I have the 701 501 & 503. The only one I'd consider putting that camera on is the 503. 701 is great for my dslr, 501 would work but is not nearly as smooth as the 503. Oh...and all of mine are the newer hdv models. Anyone used the new 504?

The 504 head is very nice.....especially for the money.

I've got a 701HDV which I use on my Gitzo GT2941 LVL lightweight levelling pod.

It works, just, with my XLH1 and either the standard 20x zoom or my Canon EF70-200 F4 lens. No pans or tilts though. Everything needs to be locked tight.

My only use is when weight and portability are really at a premium, and I control the camera as much as possible by the wireless remote.

Otherwise get one of the bigger recommended Manfrotto heads, or if money allows, a Vinten or a Sachtler.

If you need to do pans or tilts, and you value your final results, get a Sachtler or a Vinten. While expensive, a really good fluid head is critical when to step up to full HD, and it can be used over the lives of several cameras.
