If you can

Warning: Our latest HD H.264 clip "Ningaloo and Alien Pleasure" is around 320 megs in size and runs at 1280/720 resolution- 6.5mbps. You need a fast computer and very good graphcs card to be able to play it at full res. It would be best to first download the full file before playing. It runs for 6.28 mins.

PC users: Right Click and Save Target As.

Mac users: Hold the CTRL key down and then click on the link to save to your desktop.

Very nice footage. You are really torturing HDV format. I wish canon had a DVCPRO HD recording device on the camera, and it pure progresive...

amazing clarity...what camera did you shoot this footage with? is this a Z1?

All our material has been shot on the Sony 3CCD FX1 HDV inside Amphibico's Phenom underwater housing.

But I got the feeling they might go get a HVX200 because of it DVCPRO. You ca n see the freaking mpeg2 in the water. But like some say, they dont see it, so it might not be a problem.

What lovely footage and beautifully edited. Inspirational viewing.

But what was wrong with the original sounds of the tide and the breeze buffeting the mic to replace them with tracks of an ol' corn threshing machine or worse?

Thanks all for having a look.

It was shot with the FX1 on cinemamode with some other colour tweeking in the camera.

I did not use the natural sound as the day was so quiet all I got mainly was the sound of flies......

The raw HDV Mpeg 2- 25mbps is fine. The H.264 was compressed down to around 6.8mbps hence more compression noise. Go and download that big H.264 skiing demo from the Apple site, you can see it in that as well. However HDV is not perfect but alot cheaper than a Sony F900 and the quality is not 10 times worse, but maybe half as good.

The HVX200 would be better but how many times would I have to get out and put another card in on a 90 min dive? Im sure there will be small drives out soon that let you feed the FX1 or Z1 into it on the run to a less compressed format. Looking at the HDV ones out now, they would even fit in my housing with the camera.

DVFilm Atlantis does a very good job of converting to progessive, then just edit as progressive.

The best thing is the cheap FX1 and Z1's are going to hang around like the old VX1000's did, so even a few years down the track I could always find a replacement camera to fit in the housing if I have problems.
